Nitto Neo Gen tires: DISCUSS!

So my Falken Azenis are about done.
Good tires, I liked them quite a bit.

So here's my dilemma. I know the Azenis, I've run on them exclusively for 3 years now (no, not the same set), but I think it's time for a change. Time to try something new... I'm interested in the Neo's cuz I think i'd feel less bad about leaving my camber a lil more negative for some better corner turn-in, but I don't know if the supposed longevity increase of the inside patch on the Neos is real or just marketting.

Who here has run the Neos? how to they perform street vs. track (autoX and drift, I couldn't care less about drag hookup). More importantly, how are they vs. the Falken Azenis?

If you've run one or the other, or both please give me your opinions and feedback (please no 3rd party opinions, I don't wanna hear what your brother's friend's sister's boyfriends used to run on his civic).

edit: damn, I thought I posted this in OT, mods please move.

You should specify which Azenis you're comparing against. I'm assuming it's the ST-115s, but...

doh, good point, thanks hahahaha... that was almost like, "yeah, I know nissans are good, cars, I love mine, but I was wondering if a Toyota was better?" LOL.

You're right ST-115s.

i haven't seen anyone use Nitto at the track, it seems like the people that use 'em are Honda folks , and not the hardcore ones

Get Azenis Sports or kumho MX and be done with it

I have good luck with Nitto Neo Gens on my GS300 They are very nice tires and hold up quite well to the boosted 2JZ in there. The only thing I don't like is that I can't rotate because I have a staggered fitment. If you want a good tire I would recommend the Hankook ventus HRII I have had them for over 25K on my 240 and had 2 drift events and 3 auto X events on them and its driven daily. Those tires may not offer the crazy amount of grip that you would normally get from an ST115 but damn they sure do last. The other option for the same amount of money has to be the Dunlop Direzza or the FM901. Both good tires as well and the FM901 is the older version and last quite a bit with good chunk of tread on both of them. Well good luck on the tires and let me know. I ran the Nitto's on a 19X8 245/35/29 Volk CE28N and the Hankook in 245/35/18 on Regamaster EVO let me know what you get.

We should have a thread just for tires. Have like factory life expetancy and real time life expectancy from tires as well as the amount and type of events and wheels and HP figures to determine the best overall tire for certains purposes. Goodluck Yoshi

Thanks man, that's exactly the kind of response I was lookin for.

Option Zero:
I'm certainly not apologizing for your vagueness, you just said "azenis sport", look on teh falken website, the RS-01D, St-115 and RT-215 ALL are called "sports". How was I to know which you referred to? The reason I wanted to try the Neos is because I'm not doing any track days this year, but I wanted something that would be at least competent for when I return, hence my wanting to compare the ST115s to the Neos, this is not just a track tire, in fact the opposite for next 9 months or so. You say Nittos are a honda tire, and from what I've seen, that's a fairly accurate stereotype, but then so are Kuhmos so....? Did you run the MX's? What was your take on those?

Azenis ST-115 = shtity daily driver or people who "drift"
Azenis Sport RT-215 = best performance tire for the dollar

In other words...the only Azenis worth mentioning is the Azenis SPORT

apology accepted

And yeah, don't buy the Sports. They're hard to find, and you'd rather have Nittos anyways.

Kumho MX are AWESOME for the $$$.

Better than the (old) Azenis Sport RT-215...the RT-615 should be comparable.

Azenis get slick with heat, MX's get better with heat.

I autocross my S14 regularly and I routinely have the fastest time of the day for street tires. I occasionally lose that title to an STU class WRX-STi also running MX's...

I owned the old Azenis Sport and was not impreressed.

Now, the RT-615 should be better than the RT-215, but the price is MUCH higher.

Hmm... well damn man, now you've given me a new idea for open track days.... MX on front, azenis on rear... Hmmm.... how much do the MXs run for say a 205/45/17? Dammit, this is getting more complicated than I'd planned :P (in a good way tho!) Thanks so much for the input!

MX will be about $20 bucks or so more expensive I guess depending on size

While I respect orion's opinion, and have heard complaints about the RT215 in heat, I think they may be slightly exaggerated. The Sports remain a very, VERY popular tire in AutoX, and between runs, some people jsut spray a little cold water on them, and they're fine. I suppose on the track, there's more heat put on them, so that makes the difference, but I think it's tolerable, especially given the price of the Sports.

The MX's I am told provide less ultimate grip, but the heat factor is its advantage

I have never heard anyone refer to the ST-115 as an "Azenis Sports", in the circles i hang out with, which are pretty much all grip drivers, not drifters, Azenis Sport = RT-215, so I suppose that's just a personal thing. The ST-115 doesn't exist for me, it's not even a performance tire

MOST Kumho's (supra 712 and 711 ..or lesss) are crappy, cheap, "regular" tires that people run who don't care abo ut performance...i.e. most of the ricers on the street. So in that respect, Kumho could be called a Honda tire too... the MX is very good bang for the buck street performance tire. Kumho also makes some r-compounds which are good, too, but outside of this discussion. In the end, I don't think you can stereotype Kumho like you can Nitto, which is nearly exclusively run by the wanna be street dragger crowd (find me someone who seriously runs them on a road course...)

Come to think of it, most of the other Falken tires suck overall, hel...they make 20 inch tires for SUV"s...

Every company has some low-end tires for the normal folks...i.e. Bridgestone makes the all-weather shitty RE92 that came stock on the WRX, but they also make the best street tire around (price not withstanding), the S-03

I mentioned this in other threads but I've had the Kumho MX and now run the RT-215. Big difference, the Azenis is way stiffer sidewall and makes the car really responsive. In terms of grip it is similar but I have to give the edge to the Azenis. Overall grip is higher even with the heat fade. MX stays pretty flat as the heat goes up but not as grippy initially.

My main complaint about the MX is the soft sidewall which is good on your daily driver but not good for feeling the road under hard cornering.

As far as good autocross times, you don't always need the best tires. My friend gets best times in ST-S class in his stock motor 89 240SX with some junkyard Federal tires he uses for drifting...

I was noticing the same thing. I've heard great things about the MX from NUMEROUS different people. Everytime someone mentions them, OptionZero has to badmouth them, and praise the 215s.

Jon, I mentioned that in another post... Yeah, you won't feel the soft sidewalls as much with 17" or larger wheels simply because you have less rubber. I'm running 205/55 16"

This may be the shollowest thing i've said to date. But i wouldnt use Nitto tires solely for the fact that i dont like their advertisements. They are always advertising to the tuner market (ricers in eclipses ) and drag racers..(the 555 extreme) and they have a tire with the word "extreme" in it.

now i'm highly offended? How can I be a snob when you have more mods then me? I'm just jealous, I guess... and th only way I can beat you is by typing on an internet forum

anyways, i'm sorry these drifters are mad. your next set of nitto NeoGens are on me. I'll pay for it by selling all of my stupid "grip" stuff, and get a Version:Select kit, paint my car red, and cap on all the other grip people too!

Then I will run headfirst into a mountai... Wait, no, i'll slide sideways really fast into a mountain!

What's that supposed to mean? I don't give a flying fuck how many mods you have. At this point, my car is pretty much bone stock from the outside (except for wheels/Sportlines)...woohoo. That will all change very soon, but right now, it's pretty much stock, with my USDM TYT3 KA24DE y0!

I don't have a V:S kit, my car isn't red, and I don't 'cap' on grip people.

yeah, so you'd pay more money for a tire with less grip...because it's labeled a summer performance tire?

the Yokohama Parada Spec-2 is also listed as an "ultra performance summer tire"

who wants to run those?

I'd be willing to bet you any amount of money that driven the same way by the same person on the same car, the ST-115s will get much better treadwear than the 215s. Not everyone wants ultimate grip with less treadwear. Actually, in his first post, he asked about the marketing of the increased treadwear on the inside edge, for camber wear. So, since he wants to know about the Neo Gens and we've hijacked the shit out of this thread, I'm done. Someone with Neo Gen experience, please get this thread back on topic!

Damnit, are you a fucking moron? I never said grip wasn't an issue. I said he wanted grip AND treadwear; after all, this car will primarily be a daily driver/street car for the next 9 months, as he said.

i don't wanna sound off topic of anything, but i just wanna add something to the mix.

first off, the rt-215 vs kumho mx argument is stupid. my friend is a national level autox competitor and he's run both tires back to back, getting similar times (withing .05 sec) with both. the difference is that the rt-215's will give you more confidence due to the stiffer sidewall. the mx's just drive differently.

now, yoshi, if you're looking for a performance street tire (like the mx or rt-215), i'd like to add the hankook z212 to the mix. they're cheaper than the azenis, come in a plethora of sizes and offer just as good a grip. plenty national level autoxers run them. they will be my next tire when i decide to get some. just thought i'd add that in.

sorry, i don't have any info on the neogens.

Well here's my take on some other options to look at since not many people have run the neo gens. Granted they could be good, but they could suck and do you really want to drop 4 bills on something that sucks? If this isnt what you wanted, sorry.

Falken FK451s, Yoko es100s, Hankook K104s & RS-2s are all worth a look, all comparable to the 115s if not better. rs2s are suppossed to be the new budget auto-x tire since 215s are no longer produced and the 615s are pricey. If you ahve the cash and are not worried about treadwear MXs get my vote.

the thing is..........

nobody is this thread said shit about Neogens. nobody. stop talking about other tires, nobody gives a fuck.

but you are right, they are ricers tires, hard compound, but id be willing to run a pair in the rear just for drift if i had money.
