hey yall
just got my first 240 recently, tis a 91 5 spd fastback, barebone style (not SE or LE(?)). the motor is pretty fucked up as is evidenced by the repetitive loud banging noise eminating from under my hood. at least we assumed it was the motor. now we have dissassembled the motor as much as is possible without takin it out of its home. we also took off all that excess crap under the hood (i.e. ac compressor, radiator, intake, etc) cept the exhaust manifold which is bein a real bitch. and the bad news, we still have no clue what caused that noise . we assume one of the rods is broken but when we crank the engine manually, they all seem to work properly. we are buildin a nifty lil pully thing to take the engine out at the moment, and i was curious to know if anyone out there has any insight as to what might be causing this infernal noise. or if anyone has any helpful pointers for pullin this engine out. like how to get that fuckin exhaust manifold off (its actually off of the engine, but we want to take it completely out from uunder the hood but its bolted to the exhaust system really REALLY securely) im thinkin we are just gonna have to cut it off (no big deal since i am gettin a nice new header to replace it anywho) uhhh ya, so any and all advice is MUCH appreciated

Wow guys great advice <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sigh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='
![]() Did you try to pinpoint the noise before you tore it apart? Any clue where the noise was coming form in the engine bay and was the noise deep and cause a big vibration through the car or more of a small clickity clank noise. |

what kinda sound is it producin? does it sound like a loud trackter? i know it's hard to explain online, but unless we have an idea of what the sound is like, it's hard to help <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

yes! its very hard to explain online.... uhhh, we did pinpoint the sound, not that it mattered cuz i wanted to take it all apart anyhow. but its slightly ir-rhythmic and LOUD and bangy and my theory is that some kinda timey thing was off or some rod or somethin somewhere down in there is broken <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() :!: <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/thumbs-up.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hmmm.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hmmm:'>

You probably will need to put a torch to the exhaust manifold nuts; especially if they have never been taken off before. If you just continuously hammer on them with an impact wrench you'll just snap them off. Do you have a service manual for your car yet? I would definately have one on hand before you start tearing into you engine b/c if you rebuild you motor it helps to have torque specs and trouble shooting solutions on hand. Just a few friendly suggestions.

OK, OK, OK, here is what you do...
to get the exhaust off, point a loaded shotgun at the bolts and fire. Now, onto the "loud, bangy" noise, there is definately something wrong here, and if it's not a timing problem, or a rod like you think, chances are it is something else. You've gotta do something about it, or else it will never go away. My advice to you would be to rip apart the entire motor, to see what everything does, and then blow it up with some kind of mining/demolition grade explosive. then get a new engine of your choice. That should alleviate all "bangy" noises. If that doesn't work, walk exactly ten paces from your new motor, in any direction, turn, and fire with the shotgun you used to remove the exhaust bolts. That'll do, surely.

That is the funniest thing I've read all evening, no offense <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=' ![]() Anyhow, it would have helped if you knew what was wrong before tearing it apart. Wouldn't it suck to rebuild the engine, put it back up, and find the same problem? Could potentially be timing chain, iirc this is an interference valve system, were the valves bent? If it's irrythmic though, that sorta throws off all of the usual suspects. . . Well, good luck. I don't know if anybody will be able to provide much insite on what's banging under there.

I meant it to be funny. And by the way, I had the elusive "timing chain" noise problem, caused by a faulty "chain guide in my old KA24 motor. It wasn't really that loud, and sounded more like a "loose chain" than a "loud bangy thing". that's what tipped me off that it might be timing chain related in the first place. But as for "under construction", his problem is definately, without a doubt, something.
