Wheel bearing bad???? help!
ok... noise is coming from the right front wheel. Sounds goes round and round and round and round and.... well, you get the idea. I found 1 thread about this when I searched, but, the problem was never solved. Do you guys think it's a wheel bearing? If so, how hard are they to replace. Also, I just got some wheels, 17x9... I don't know if this matters.

I am in the process of replacing a right front wheel bearing....so IMO your problem sounds precisely the same. If the sound is proportional to your speed and it does change pitch around turns, you can almost bet it's the WB.

For S13's you can buy the bearings separate from the hub, you need to press out the old and press in the new.
I just did mine on my s14, but I had to get the whole hub, I can't get the bearings alone. Getting the bearings pressed out/in will take longer than mine did. Just remove wheel, remove caliper, remove rotor, remove hub nut, hub slides right off Get bearings pressed Slide in hub, tighten hub nut (150-200 ft/lbs tq.), install rotor, install caliper, install wheel.

Wheel bearings usually make a whining or a deep whirring sound. Not round and round like maybe...used up brake pads. It doesnt seem like you're describing wheel bearing noise. Can you describe the noise any better? Is it more apparent on the freeway? Does it get louder if you turn the wheel at speed...say like sweeping turns on the freeway...?

Don't be intimidated by changing it.
But make sure you know its the problem first.Yeah can you give us a few more detailed sounds.

Load and unload the wheel bearing and see if the noise almost goes away when it is unloaded. You can do it by steering left the right fairly hard...

Wider/lower offset wheels can cause wheel bearings to fail faster than stockers since they increase the stress on them. But yeah, bad wheel bearings almost sound like your tires are really out of balance or something. Happens at certain speeds as well, not throughout everything. The hub assembly for my VW was 180 bucks, EACH. GR!

Here is something you can do to test it.
Lift up the front of the car and shake the wheel holding the top and bottom of it. By this, I mean push the top and bottom of the wheel alternatively as you are facing it. If the wheel bearing is bad, you can feel it moving when you shake it. Hope this helps you. |

you can buy/switch new bearings, you just have to get your old bearing unpressed from your current hub and press the new one into the same hub...so two bearings, one hub...in with the new, out with the old...only tricky thing (unless you have access to a press) is the unpressing/pressing process...
