I am considering getting a 1995+ 240SX but I have a few questions about what power options I have. I'd like to turbo charge it but I have no idea where to begin looking for info on stuff like that. What kind of power can I get out of the engine without building up the engine and what kind of power can I get if I do build the engine, also how much would it be about to build up the engine to handle higher boost. Any info would be great, thanks.

I don't know many numbers but I think the '95 + engines can handle 10- 11 psi of boost. The main thing to upgrade for more boost is the pistons. They cost about $700. Take a look at the different turbo kits that are available for the KA24DE (fmax, nsport, xs eng.). They will give you an idea of what you need to do it. Basically you need a turbo, turbo manifold, downpipe, wastegate, intercooler, piping, FMU (or reprogrammed ECU). Most of them suggest a higher capacity fuel pump. You will need higher flow injectors if you want to make lots of power. I think you can do 300 HP with 370 cc injectors. Any more and you will need MSD 55 lb and a modified fuel rail.

####.. i don't have much to add to GT's post
Anyway, I think that the FMax kit and NSport kit claim 240hp. One is 240hp at 6.5psi, and the other is at 7psi. And you will need a new exhaust. Running boost through the stock pipes would be a catastrophy. West would know a lot about this.

alright so I can run 11psi on the stock engine for about 300hp (flywheel I'm guessing).

anyone know where I can check out info on the dif kits avaliable? Also are any of these kits good for higher boost or will I have to upgrade turbos after I put in forged pistons? If I could get 300hp at the wheels, that would be ideal.

For 300 crank HP, you may need to upgrade the injectors to 370 cc (270 cc is stock). If you know you want 300 rwhp, you might as well go ahead with the MSD injectors and get a JWT ECU that is programmed for these injectors. If you want to start out with the stock pistons, just get a big turbo that is capable of the boost you will eventually want, and use a boost controller to reduce that until you rebuild. The problem with that is turbo lag (bigger turbos take longer to spool up). Try to be realistic about how much HP you want/need. 300 crank HP might not seem like much but this is a 2700 lb. car we are talking about. If you really want mad HP, you might want to consider an SR20DET. Supposedly, they have a higher potential for HP. Someone mentioned that 350 HP was all you would want to push the KA to (?).

Hmmm.. well 350hp - 15% from driveline loss is almost 300hp at the wheels theoretically anyway and that's #### good enough for me but is this 350 limit you talking about on the stock engine or even if it's built up? I don't want to have to get a new engine, I'd really like to limit the amount of cash I spend. I'm fine with upgrading the fuel system, that's not really the problem but I want to know what I'll need to support all that hp, just injectors and a fuel monitoring device (like apexi's S-AFC?) or will I need new pumps, injectors, rails, etc.

Does anyone on this forum actually have a turbo on their 240SX or know a site by someone who does, I'd love to read up on this before I go buying cars and parts.

The problem with injectors is that they have a limited flow capacity. If you are running alot of boost, there is the possiblity that the injectors will run wide open and will still not be able to supply enough fuel. This will make you run lean which will cause detonation and ruin your engine. To get more fuel, you have to upgrade the injectors. 370 cc drop right in and MSD need a modified fuel rail. With bigger injectors you need an ECU reprogram because the stock ECU thinks it is sending pulse widths for 270 cc injectors and will run way rich. You can keep the 270 cc injectors and use a FMU (cheaper but less accurate, similar to fmax stage1) instead of getting the new ECU ($600). It will raise fuel pressure as boost increases which will trick the fuel system into giving more fuel but like I said there is a limit to the amount of fuel they can flow. I think 7psi is safe on the 270 cc injectors. HP costs money, so you just have to figure out what's in your budget. I think there are 3 or 4 guys running KA24DE-T's on here. I've just been researching it because I would like to turbo a KA or get an SR, soon. If it was me, I would just get a turbo capable of 11 psi boost, 370 cc injectors, bigger fuel pump, and JWT ECU (similar to fmax stage2). Swapping pistons and going for over 300 HP doesn't seem like it's worth the money to me.

yeah, I understand fuel related problems, I've had to deal with them in my camaro. Right now I'm considering either the 240SX and then turbo it or a GS300/SC300 and turbo that. I like the idea of a turboed GS because I'm pretty tall (6"6') and there's alot of room in one of those. (I'm not talking about the newest GS, can't afford that I mean the 93-97 ones and the 92-97 SC's)

I know that if I get the 240SX I woun't be able to settle for much less than 300 at the wheels because it's a smaller 2 door car, with the other cars I'll settle for less hp for a little while before feeling the need to upgrade. The 240 IS cheaper to turbo though (in theory). I'm all mixed up right now, at one point I wanted a 2g Eclipse GSX but their crankwalk issues turned me away from that idea.

First off, you have a STOCK supra TT and you want to mod a 240sx? Sell camaro and single turbo the supra please OK i had to say that, now on to what your talking about. A lexus with a turbo? I hope you have deep pockets for that, and it probably would'nt be as reliable due to the fact that you would not have alot of people with experience on turbo lexus's. As for people on this site with turbo's look in the reader rides area there is a site from a guy from orlando that shows his turbo 240sx, f-max probably makes the best turbo kit, use a search engine to look them up or goto the links section i'm sure there is some way to them through there. Anyway get the kit and stick with the horse power that kit gives you till you have the money for internal upgrades then turn up the boost. Of course get exhaust and intake before you get the kit. Well thats all i can think of right now..tell use what car you decide on.

Sorry CA18GUY, but you said get an intake and exhaust before the turbo. I can see an exhaust, but if you know you are gonna turbo it, you shouldn't waste money on the intake.
As far as the 350 hp is the max, i'm not too sure. There are many 11 second KA24DE-Ts. Also, after an exhaust, turbo, downpipe, and ECM and fuel crap.. you should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 300. From a kit.
If you upgrade the turbo in the kit, or get a slightly bigger one, and pistons, and 72lb injectors, you should be able to withstand more than 11psi in the engine.

Well the Supra is staying stock for now, I just got it and I don't plan on going furthur than BPU status.

turboing a lexus GS300 is the same as turboing an NA Supra and alot of people have experience with that so turboing a lexus isn't a problem except that it'll cost maybe 1k more than turboing a 240sx.

And I can't sell the camaro, it's already in the process of becoming a drag car.

They make a very complete turbo kit for the GS that includes everything you need except a boost controller for about 4600 and the 240SX turbo kit I was was around 3900, so the difference is minimal once you start thinking about it. The GS turbo kit produces 320bhp without the GS needing internal modifications and I've been told it's reliable.

I honestly can't make a definte decision, I've got about 2-3 weeks to choose though so I still have some time.

Jeff240SX your right about the intake but i'd get an cat-back before the turbo (i should have said get as many pre turbo mods done as possible) as for the KA going over 350hp, I know that can be done but can it be done on stock internals is the question.

Here" target="_blank">http://www.zilvia.net/forums....

Here is a guy pushing 520hp to the wheels with turbo and nitrous on his KA motor. The motor has forged low compresion pistons (JE) and Crower rods. Everything else in the motor is stock.

I have a turbo KA as well, before I blew the motor(after a year of turbo abuse) I was running 10psi on a small T3, with a 2 1/2" downpipe and exhaust. I dynoed 200.1 and ran 14.2@ 98. The very next week I pulled the exhaust off, going only through the downpipe and put a Limited slip diff in from an infinity J-30 ($300 at a junkyard) I ran 13.4 @ 103 I was running JW ECU and decided to try an apex S-AFC for some fine tuning, well must have done something wrong because 30 minutes after it was installed and (ghetto) tuned, I melted a piston smoking a 5.0 mustang. Now the engine is rebuilt and should be out of the shop on monday or tuesday, I have upgraded everything possible and am hoping for over 300 to the wheels with my T3/T4. Once I get a full T4 and stand alone engine management I will be trying to obtain 400 to the wheels, this is my goal. I want to make one 11 second pass and be kicked out for not having a roll cage. Any questions you have I will try to answer, just email me at [email protected]
