Moods - the difference between "good rap" and bullshit "happy rap" music...
So I decided to lookup the review on Ice Cube's last album, laugh now cry later. Surprisingly enough, I've been spreading the word with friends because I've been really pleased with a few of the tracks on this album. I've never been a huge Ice Cube fan, but I think he's always had some good (or great) tracks.. but IMO, NWA is where its at.. that was the gem that nothing could ever replace.
Either way, not taking into account NWA.. I still like the new album. One thing I thought was funny, was the "mood descriptions" they gave Ice Cube.. check it out: Ice Cube: * Brash * Harsh * Angry * Bitter * Confident * Provocative * Confrontational * Volatile * Rebellious * Visceral * Reckless * Street-Smart * Fiery * Angst-Ridden * Rowdy * Outrageous * Energetic * Raucous * Nihilistic * Malevolent * Rambunctious |

Now, lets compare this to one of my other favorite rappers, and its no wonder why I like them both.. in my opinion, they summarize what rap is and should really be about:
GZA (From WuTang Clan): * Cold * Hostile * Eerie * Aggressive * Street-Smart * Ominous * Confrontational * Menacing * Harsh * Intense * Rousing * Confident * Tense/Anxious * Visceral * Rebellious |

Now to end this post, I'de like to show what they wrote about Will Smith - and why he shouldnt even be considered a rapper. This fucker should be listed under pop music, right next to fuckin Madonna. Fuck that, UNDER Madonna. She's more hardcore and gangster than him.. I think she fucked with Big Daddy Kane, so I give her more respect:
Will Smith: * Amiable/ Good-Natured * Slick * Effervescent * Party/ Celebratory * Playful * Fun * Summery * Brash * Confident * Gleeful * Fruitcake * Zilvia Newbie |

Okay.. so I lied, I am not going to stop with Will Smith. I wanted to add Jay-Z.. he will be my final entry:
Jay-Z: * Rousing * Confident * Bravado * Brash * Volatile * Confrontational * Aggressive * Angry * Street-Smart * Boisterous * Menacing * Provocative * Rebellious * Hostile * Thuggish * Stylish * Exuberant * Energetic * Harsh * Literate * Freewheeling * Repetetive & sometimes rediculously tiring and boring to listen to. OK, thanks for reading. Bye. ps: Go listen to the Ice Cube track "Smoke Some Weed" gaddamn thats a badassed track. |

But hey, we're all a little more reformed then we were 10 years ago. I like Ice Cube back in NWA time up until like "You know how we do it". Dopeman is one of my all-time favorite songs.

Blackstar's first album remains as one of my favorites of all time, the only fault is that is TOO SHORT, that album could have gone on another 15 minutes and been just fine, at the rate they were going. Quote:
Add to that the number of songs (and not just the singles) that were GREAT on that album, then add back in the ones that were not planned to be singles, but became that anyway. Now, sticking to the same album, listen to the last verse on "Reservoir Dogs," which I have been stuck listening to after a thread in premium members a couple weeks back (White Mel knows) and the song immediately following that, "It's like that" If, after doing JUST that, you're still telling yourself that Jay-Z can't rhyme or "sucks," or whatever the fuck ever, then you guys have all bumped your damned heads. |

im not trying to say that he completely sucks. he just sucks a bit at times... for example.. how often can you listen someone claim hes the greatest, best and baddest. i mean, LL cool J did that in the song "im bad" and that was cool, cause it was in the 80s. but for some reason, everytime i hear fuckin jay-z open his mouth hes constantly going on and on and on with that shit. i'de rather listen to someone like gza with his insanely repetitive beats because his lyrics make you think. i'de rather listen to too short because atleast i get a laugh with some funky ass beats. though, i really did enjoy jayz's flip flop jam with killer mike, that was a badassed track. either way, hes not horrible.. hes very talented. just a lot to have to listen to sometimes. bring back pac... "i wrote this song a long time, a real long tiiiime ago!" |

Goddamn you said every word I was thinking. +10000. Hard Knock Life album is classic. And so is In my Lifetime Vol 1 and Reasonable Doubt. Jay-z did change things up shortly after Hard Knock life, but I think for the most part redeemed himself on the Blueprint 1. I know it's crazy, but Jay-Z has been my favorite MC ever since I stumbled upon buying the single of "Feelin it" off of Reasonable Doubt. It was from that point on I was hooked. And really at that time, he wasn't even popular. I'd tell people about him and they'd either not know of him or think he was whack. As time went on he basically because one of the biggest personalities in Hip Hop history, which no one can deny, period. Now about the GZA album, like I said, it is arguable ONE of the best ever. It's up there no matter how you look at it. The beats may be some of RZA's best production, and GZA's lyrics ont eh album I don't think he's been able to match since. IMO it's the pinnacle of solo Wu albums.

See, I liked Ice Cube just as he was leaving NWA and up until he did "Player's Club," then he fell into that whole thing of barber Shop and children't movies, much in the same manner that Eddie Murphy had before him.
I agree with Charlie, as it relates to J Dilla (moreso as the man behind the boards and his eye/ear for talent in who to work with and how than his rhyming ability), but not so much so with Binary star. My ears are wide open, I can appreciate Cube's shit from when I could stomach it, and I can still listen to most of what Jay-Z has done, simply ignoring the existence of The Blueprint 2 and 2.1, they did not exist to me. Again, with GZA, I could listen to his first album, his work with other Wu-Tang members on their own albums and very much enjoyed what I was hearing, right up until Wu-Tang forever, which would have been just fine as a single album with the presentation of quality material... In my opinion, everyone in the group not named Ghostface Killah, who would later release "Supreme Clientele" and Ol' Dirty, with "N**** Pleaze" would go on to make albums that I would venture calling good after that. I'm at work right now and cannot risk content that might get me fired, so I plan to further my discussion of this when I am at home. |

GZA's first album is arguable one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever.
Charlie...go DL it and listen. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

it has nothing to do about "hearing" cursing, its just common courtesy for those browsing through the forum...if someone's boss see's "ass, fuck, cunt, shit"...etc then they could get in trouble if not fired (just as PHLIP mentioned earlier)
