If ur timing chain goes bad is it really worth changin it some ppl say they would just get a new engine and some say its an easy operation just lengthy in time , so which is the best way to go about it , new engine or replace it and if its replace the chain how do u go about doin it exactly and how hard is it ?

My mechanic told me about $1200 between parts and labor for the top and bottom chain (S14). I am not expert but I beleive you have to take the head off to get the top one. I was told that if the cost of the repair exceeded 80% of a new or used engine in good working order then you should get a new one. Consideriing you can get a red top SR for $1500 if you look in the right place you might as well save for an SR. I have the money right now I am just waiting for my chain to break. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='

i think ur mech jerked ur chicken. if u look on 240sx.org, ull see that somebody quoted that parts would only come to around 100 or so bucks.
Then, u go to a mech u trust and know that he will give u a good deal and have him do it(my mech would do the installation for 200) so ummmm, I say it costs in the neighborhood of 300 bucks give or take 50. Whatever u do, dont go to a nissan tech, hahaha, their labor would probably be 600 or more.

Timing chains don't really break or go bad. They can jump off if something with the assembly is messed up.
But if the timing chain did jump and bend your valves in the process a new motor (either SR or KA at the prices they are at now) wouldnt be a bad idea. |

I was just talking to a guy who's daughter's chain popped. she took it to mechanic who replaced the head and did full valve job. Came to around 900. Car runs great now though

![]() -Jason</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'> you dont have to remove the head for any chain. thats what the fsm says but its not needed you dont even need to drop the oil pan on a dohc. those are easyier from a sohc total parts for my timing chain on my sohc was around 140 bucks. labor was provided by me. i helped someone do their dohc timing chain over the net. its fairly weasy if you have semi skilled car exp. and the fsm
