I found out what the s14 gas tank is made of

The S14 gas tank is made of plastic. I found this out first hand last night while cutting crap out of the chassie so i can start seam welding. I poked a little tiny hole in it by accident. It then proceeded to dump 15 gallons of fuel into my garage. So were all sitting there in this big puddle of gas and then we hear the pilot light for the water heater kick on, so we hose down the car and garage and roll the car out into the driveway. So after it drained for an hour we pushed it back in and started pulling the tank.

Theres nothing like laying in a puddle of gas while working on a car, The gas dripping in my face was also a nice addition to the whole expeirience.

So to pull the tank its like pulling a z32 tank. Heres what you have to remove.

1. Exhaust
2. Driveshaft
3. Wheels
4. Rear brake calipers
5. Fuel pump wires
6. Rear coilovers
7. Rear subframe and diff
8, gas tank heat shield
9. gas tank retaining straps.

All while being completely soaked in gas, and laying in a pool of gas.
Just what i wanted to do on my thursday night.

Anyways, after seeing the thickness of that tank, i will never use one again, it is retarded and could very very easily rupture if hit. I am going the fuel cell route in the s14 like in my s13. Yay.

You were going to weld with a gas tank near by? The reason it's plastic is cause it's safer than steel. Pinto anyone?

It is safer than steel for a street car, but being right above the exhaust it would seem to be a saftey issue. The tank is very thin, maybe the thickness of a plastic bucket.

And i was going to pull the tank before i was going to weld. we were just cutting stuff out at that time.

I was on the 210 freeway on my way back from school. There was a fire extinguisher ahead of me, but i was stuck. Some idiot tail gating me and cars on both sides of me. needless to say my tank broke. I found out the hard way on how to do this. to my surprise i also found out it was made of plastic. I was kind of shocked, because someone told me a car had to have a metal gas tank in order to be street legal.
