My 91 240 has been fu#@*& up lately... first it had rough idle . the needle traveled from 400-1900rpms then some times it just starts smoking....

my local mech told me it was the MAF sensor.. got it replaced... but it still did that...

then he said it was a vaccum. got it fix... and its still doing it...

i need help.. the idle is annoying and the smoke is gonna geet me in trouble...

My intake manifold gasket was shot and I had similar problems. I could hear the air leak, just had a hard time finding it. Do you hear any air leaks?

Where is the smoke it coming from?

Do these symptoms only occure during accelaration or idling, or both?

Do your idle problems occur at start up or after the engine is warmed up? Are the symptoms sporadic or do they happen consistently.

I'd suggest checking your timing and replacing your sparkplugs if they're fouled. Make sure there are no air leaks anywhere. Also check your throttle cable and throttle body. Make sure that they move freely and smoothly.

But, in the end, you might just have bad piston rings (Or at least an oil leak somewhere). That would explain the black smoke.

Anyway, happy hunting.

Sounds like you need a new mechanic. He probably doesn't know what the problem is & doesn't want to spend the time trying to figure it out. There could be all kinds of reasons why your idle is crap - anything from a bad IAV valve, to a faulty fuel regulator or bad fuel injector or even a short in the wiring harness or ground.

If you are mechanically inclined and are willing to learn about your car, now would be the perfect time to download a Factory Service Manual from here & read up on your car. By using the SEARCH feature here on Zilvia you can download a Factory Service Manual for free & figure out how to troubleshoot your S13 yourself.

To start, we always recommend you learn how to read the troublecodes off your ECU. This helps a lot when trying to figure out what's wrong with your car. Click on the attached link, ( http://www.240sx.org/faq/index.html ) for instruction on how to read your ECM codes. Once the page loads, look to the left & scroll down till you get to " ECM, reading trouble codes DOHC ", click on that link.

After reading your ECM troublecodes off the ECU, come back & post them here. That should give us a better idea as to what's wrong with your S13 and help us & you troubleshoot your problems better.

Hope this helps...good luck!!
