prob the timing chain if its a SOHC. How many miles you have on the engine? My timing chain rattles all the time now. I just got all the parts for 220$ and im going to fix it myself. I might document it with some pictures and do a writeup for it, ill let yaz know.

If the rings were worn, would it really make a noise?

Does it rattle during startup? If so, it's probably the timing chain. You have a SOHC 240 so if it is higher mileage and hasn't had the timing chain job before you should probably replace it anyway...

Or it could be a heat shield.. When I had my 1990 S13 it had a metallic rattle right around 2700rpms.. I found it to be the heat shield on the bottom of the exhaust manifold where the two pipes combine. It's probably hanging by a single loose bolt like mine was and all the rest of the bolts have probably rusted off. Check into that. It's a common problem on S13s.

Your timing chain should rattle even beyond just 3K, if it's the timing chain.

Your heat shields should rattle beyond 3K as well. The higher you rev, the more they will rattle.

Why don't you check the simple shit first?
