well, the stock SR20DET turbo is an internally-gated Garrett T25, so yes, the wastegate will be there.

Is it a mechanical or electronic model? How safe is it to add a mechanical boost controller (just worried about overboost)

Wastegates are all "mechanical". They are operated by boost pressure opening a spring/valve which allows exhaust pressure to be released, thereby controlling the amount of boost the turbo produces. A boost controller will be fine for the stock wastegate. You just hook it up to the actuator and boost away.

Keep in mind that the stock turbo is only good to MAYBE 14 psi. Mine is at 10 psi right now, and above about 6 grand, it's not making much power...lots of hot air.

All wastegates are mechanical. Only the way that the pressure line is altered is mechanical or electrically controlled.

Got to Amazon.com and go buy a book called Maximum Boost by Corkey Bell. This will answer all your questions.

Thanks for the book suggestion, I just ordered it. Any other good ones about engine technology you can recommend?
