My Power Steering is Posessed.
That's right, posessed.
This last week I got a hair up my ass and decided I was sick of not having power steering. Since I feel my arms have received enough of a workout from the powerless steering I decided to reinstall my power steering. However... Background: Back when I still had a KA my power steering worked perfectly fine, with not issues whatsoever. After I swapped in my S13 Blacktop I found a couple of leaks. Fixed those, and now my resvoir tank started overflowing, eventually loosing all the PS fluid. After refilling the PS resevoir 3 or 4 times I said, whatever, fuck it, and decided to drive without it (I kept the all the PS machinery like pump, belts, lines, etc. attached, just drove the car without fluid). That was about six months ago. Issue: After filling up the PS system with fluid I tried bleeding the system via the instructions in the FSM. Everything seemed fine until I started the car. HOLY SHIT! My steering wheel about broke my dainty little wrists. Basically, as soon as I try moving the steering wheel either left or right, the steering wheel steers and counter-steers violently left and right. I mean, you litterally move the steering wheel .00000001 inches in either direction and it will move back and forth on its own something like 3-4 times a second. The wheels themselves rapidly move left and right about an inch or so. So far I've done the following: replaced the PS steering pump with a known good PS pump; checked both hardlines near the cross member (all good); checked the PS resvoir; checked the lines that eminate from the PS resvoir; I even unhooked the PS sensor to see if it would make any difference, no luck. I unhooked the return PS line to see if the pump was circulating fluid and sure enough, all the PS fluid came pouring out. I don't know what else to do. Anyone got any ideas on what's up? |

when you took your lines off did you blow through them? sounds to me lick you got somthing restricted and building up back pressure. and are you moving or sitting, when your steering wheel goes crazy?

I checked all the lines for blockage. Nothing.
I've checked the wheel while sitting in the car, and while standing outside the car. Same thing happens both times. I'll try to upload a video later on today to show everyone what's going on. |

i've been checking all the tsb's i have at my access and even called my buddy who's a nissan master tech, he thinks it's a restriction too. but i can't any tsb's for any thing about the sr's power steering. but i got to thinking, i don't know if you have or not, but did you upsize the pully's, i know some people do, and that could cause pressure build up if their too big.

if it's not a blocked line or a problem with your pump it pretty much leaves only one thing, your steering rack. It's possible that running it without oil for that long has damaged the internals. Might want to inspect/swap your rack... Crazy problem though, hope you get it sorted out.
edit: FYI of course unplugging the ps switch didn't fix it; that switch is used to send a signal to the ECU when it sees an increase in the line pressure when the car is at 0mph. The ecu when supplied with this signal increases the idle speed to compensate for the PS pump draw. |

Here are two videos showing the situation
http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l9...rent=PS002.flv http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l9...rent=PS001.flv Let me know if they don't work. I'll check again to see if anything is blocked. And yeah, I had a feeling that pulling the PS sensor wouldn't do much. But hey, couldn't hurt, right? |

You've got your lines reversed somehow...same thing happened to my little brother when he swapped in his SR. Reverse the two hardlines on the bottom. HAHAHA!!! It finally happened to someone else!

It should be a simple fix. Just take off the two metal lines under the engine and swap them. My friend recently replaced his clutch, and he took off his power steering lines when he dropped the tranny. My other friend put them back in the reverse order. When my friend started his car, it did the same thing and about broke his wrist.

ahaha That looks like a good thief procaution. Atleast if anyone tried to take your car (knock on wood) They would get another thing comming and hopefully they would have there hands in the smaller holes in the wheel and snap there wrist.

could also be a stuck valve in the pump or maybe missing some things inside there like the spring or a broken spring ive had my pumps do all kinda of weird things in the past when the valves and spring in it werent in the right place, try a new pump
