welded diff clunking @ low speed turns (not just chirp)
I've had my welded diff for about a year and it clunks alot on low speed turns/parking along with the chirping. the clunking is definitely coming from the back and it happens on pretty tight turns, not all though, mainly tight and lower speed. anyone have issues like this? heres the setup on the car
*s14 w/ s13 (solid mount) welded diff *eibach springs and stock suspension ( i think, had from previous owner, ill have coilovers soon - could suspension cause this?) *aluminum subframe collars - i still have the bushings on and they look beat to hell, all crack and squished. may not matter with the collars but still *205/55/16 tires, used tire store special does this just come with the territory or is something wrong? i lifted the rear end up and went under checking everything and shaking around but couldn't find anything. any help appreciated |

Welded diff's are 100% full lock at all times, this "clunking" comes along with wheel rotation. In most cases, if you have stickier tires more clunking will occur.

Your Diff bushings might be bad. You said you have a S14 right? When I had my S14 when i would be moving I would put the clutch in at low speed (going over a speed bump or coming up to a turn) and I would hear a loud clunk from the rear. I found out my bushings were shot. This might be your probelm. Hope this helps.
p.s your going to hear alot of weird sounds with teh welded. |

To your suspension: are you saying that you have stock struts on lower springs for over a year?? EEK! Poor struts are most likely gone. That means your suspension isn't really working at all. So your wheels could just be jumping around everywhere. Everyone else has said everything else I was going to say.

You're all wrong... It's the subframe thats "clunking" ...
your bushings are garbage.. if you have subframe collars, they only help destroy the bushings faster. No big deal really.. just get solid bushings from SPL if it really bothers you. |

dolla dolla bill ya'll
lots of load will let the tires slip less load will twist axles, and cause them to jump clunking is your subframe/suspension comonents when u hear clunking, just give it more gas the load will overcome the grip of the tires, and then... why did u weld in the first place! |

Sounds like your diff bushings. I had the SAME exact problem.
I fixed it by getting an S13 diff. ![]()

What tires are you running? Depending on the compound you could either get a chirp or a clunk. Clunking noises tend to happen with higher quality tires.
