ka to sr power steering pump confusion

ok, im doing an sr swap right now, and i am confused out of my mind. i was told that in swapping to a blacktop (which all carried the japanese hicas power steering pump), you must either modify the pump to block off one of the lines or you must replace it with a ka nonhicas pump. the ka nonhicas pump is supposed to bolt right up to the sr ps pump bracket, but the ka pump that i got off of my 91 dual cam does not fit. that either means my ka pump is hicas equiped or my brackets are retarded. the thing is, i looked under my car and i did not see a hicas assembly in the back nor toe arms that looked at all tied to a hicas system. so i think what i need to do is get a ka nonhicas pump, or just modify the sr one, except i think i just broke the sr when i took it apart.

please help me. ive been stuck on this thing for a week now and its pissing me off. im close to kicking it in the balls and going manual steering.

I'm not sure why your brackets are messed up, I believe all the PS pumps fit using the same brackets.

I've got a redtop SR pump sittin in my garage, with brackets (but no lines) that I used on my non-hicas coupe before I went non-power-steering. I did it because my lines were screwed, and didn't feel like getting new lines for something I didn't really want in the first place. If you want it, shoot me a PM.

FYI, Taka Motorsports is releasing SR/DE braided steering lines soon. They're the only place I know who sell them. I'm not sure you can get them from the dealer any more.

Ill have pics up tonight of my custom pwr steering line. only like 12 inches of line, from the pump straight to the race. I also used a KA tensioner bracket with a KA pump and an SR engine pwr steering bracket. Kind of ruski-rigged it.

I have always heard people saying to use the DE ka bracket and mod it...

but you can always call a dealership and have them order a non hicas bracket... forgot how much they are.

which dealer? well support our forum and call up/check with mynismo.com

the ka bracket i have already is from a de, but none of the bolts line up. my best bet right now is to somehow mod the sr bracket or figure out how to use the sr hicas pump. either way, i dont really know what to do.

point is, either pump will work, you just have to have the correct bracketry. call Justin at Performance Nissan, or email him via mynismo.com, or PM him on here (Justified2.4 I believe), and he'll explain all your options/pricing/timeline. He's da man when it comes to OEM parts.

if you use the ka24de pump, make sure you flip the pulley around backwards and put it back on the pump face with air...Otherwise it wont line up rigth with the sr crank pulley.

i got a s13 black top and my ps pump was leaking i swapped it with my ka24de one just had to use the brackets off the sr pump.

the oem pulley off the ka ps pump is different i think it has only 3 ribs for the belt, instead of 4 like the sr's

so i just swapped it with the greedy pulley i already had.

works fine was a little snug when trying to tighten the ps belt

Not naming names but some will hide the bracket at the dealership and never find it.

Are you still trying to use the HICAS bracket? This will not work. The easiest way to fix your problem is open up the HICAS pump and take out the little metal shims that look like squares. Bolt the pump back together and use a larger bolt (don't remember the size) and plug one of the ports on the pump. Bolt it up to the original bracket and bada bing you have powersteering. This will not work if with some aftermarket top-mount exhaust manifolds. The rear end of the pump will hit the runner and not let you fit the pump in the bracket.

thank goodness, finally someone with brains who gave some good advice.

sorry to keep dragging this on, but i need to figure it out once and for all. im assuming you only take out the square shims in the back side of the pump (side closest to driver) and then bolt up that hose. anyone ever document this?
