02 sensor- Universal, oem, or wideband

My number 1 o2 sensor is bad. Should i spend 50 to get a universal that i wire, 80 on one that plugs right in(both bosh) or just get a wideband?

Will a wideband work with a stock computer(and pass smog) until i can go megasquirt, or does it not work like that?

(btw)- turbo stuff is going on soon with megasquirt, but passing smog is priority number one at the moment.

$80 isnt bad for a plug and play sensor. Widebands with controllers will work as a narrowband for the ECU, but it's not perfect (especially bad since it's the primary sensor). I'd get the $80 plug and play replacement, and wait till you've got a tuning device (megasquirt/pfc/etc) before you drop the cash on a wideband.

Oh, thats right... The wideband is usually the SECOND 02 sensor...right?

Is there any performance difference in plug and play or the universal bosch? i don't mind spending the 5 minutes on wiring as long as it works the same..

O2 sensor is an O2 sensor. Whether you buy one with a plug or some leads you're getting the exact same thing.

The wideband should be mounted further downstream anyway to avoid damage from the heat.

Narrowband is fairly inaccurate. Search if you want more info about O2 sensors that I posted.

I say that if you know how to wire and shield, you can save a few bucks by wiing yourself.

The wire harness for 3-wire heated O2 sensors is signal in the middle and non-polar power and ground on the outside. Search and you'll find more info.

Why not just cut off the harness of the old O2 sensor and solder it on the universal piece, heat shrink it, and call it a day? Saves you $30 and is still plug and play basically.
