Pulsar GTiR T28; S14 compressor housing swap
Just curious to see if anyone on here has done this swap. I've read that an S14 T28 compressor housing is a natural upgrade for the GTiR turbo, helps to improve spool and low end (since the GTiR is generally better on the top end). I'm about to do the budget GTiR turbo upgrade on my S13 SR and was wondering if it be worthwhile to track down an S14 compressor housing and swap it on.
Probably wouldn't be too much more trouble, since the housing has to be clocked to fit on a RWD SR anyway? It might even be easier this way; I shouldn't have to cut/weld the turbo inlet or compressor outlet pipes like you usually do with GTiR turbos, since it would be an S14 compressor and everything should just line up. So yeah. Has anyone on here done this? ![]()

I did it, just popped off the compressor housing bolts and pulled the compressor and swapped. Lets you use the t25 style wastegate and inlets and outlets on youre Gti-r T28. Just slight clocking needed to make it fit.

Shouldn't the S14 housing help boost come on sooner?

I went from a S15 Spec R/ GT28R to a GTi-R T28. The S15 started spooling at 2200rpms and full boost by 2700rpms. The GTi-R starts spooling at 2300rpms and full boost by 2800rpms. Both were at 7psi. I like the GTi-R more because it has that nice kick when boosting. However the GT28R its ramp up rate was disgusting. I could make the boost gauge follow my foot pedal thats instantaneous the ramp up rate is. With the GTi-R it would take a second before it got to full boost. Both are awesome.

Sounds like I made the right choice then. When I used to have my RB20 S13, my stock turbo was going bad and wouldn't hit boost until late in the powerband. I replaced it with a lower mileage stocker and boost came on a lot sooner, and the car was probably faster overall. The thing is, I liked the sudden surge of power later in the band, so I almost preferred the blown turbo

Is there anything I need to be particularly careful about? When clocking the housing I know you're supposed to loosen the bolts just enough to turn it, to make sure the wheel doesn't scrape, but I'll be taking the bolts out entirely...I guess I should just be reaaaaaaaallllllly careful when I swap the housings?

This is an excellent 'small' turbo setup. I'm upgrading my SE-R to a GTi-R turbo w/S14 comp housing in the next few weeks. There is an ex-SE-R guy by the name of Rob Cadle who is an engineer at Garrett and helped design the Disco Potato turbo. Here is what he said about the GTi-R/S14 combo back in the day:
"Article originally posted to Nissan SE-R mailing list by Rob Cadle Turbo Sizing and potential output GTi-R T-28 is a really good turbo. I think that it is better if you lose the T-3 compressor housing and get a housing off of the S14. This is a big improvement. With the T-04B compressor housing, the GTi-R turbo can support about 16 psi and 280+ wheel hp. Makes pretty good boost by 3500 RPM, too. Rob" FWD SE-R guys have make as much as 340whp (modded to external w/g) with this setup once its maxed out. Rob was a bit conservative in his estimates when he wrote that back in 2000.
