transmission help!!!!
ok so first off i replaced the clutch in my ka24e with an exedy stock clutch. put a new pilot bushing in, new tob, new rear main, and im pretty sure i got everything in correctly. lined up the clutch wiht the alignment tool, put the tob back on the fork and the fork is still on the ball blah blah blah.
ok so me and my 2 roommates go to put the tranny back in. we get the tranny all the way in but theres like a 1/2 inch gap between the bell housing and motor. is it not lining up properly? or could it be hitting something? any help would be greatly appreciated |

sounds like your just not seated in the pilot bushing....and you did remember to reinstall the "sandwich" plate before you put the flywheel back on right?

I recently went through this too while replacing my clutch. It sounds like the splines on the input shaft aren't mating up with the clutch disc. Easy fix, with the trans inserted as you had it, have one of your buddies turn the crank pulley (27mm) while pushing the trans forward. The gear will meet up and it will slide the rest of the way in. You could also rotate the trans to try to line up the gear, but thats a lot harder considering there isn't much room under there.

yes i installed teh sandwich plate that goes in between the flywheel and motor. is the pilot bushing supposed to be flush with the motor when you put it in or are you supposed to recess it in there? if that makes any sense

The pilot bushing is supposed to be flush with the rear of the engine. Your problem is just line up the splines. I just finished helping a friend of mine replacing his clutch in his s13. Those tranies aren't very easy to get the splines lined up right.

I would've thought that since he's only 1/2" away from being seated that the splines were already engaged....i've seen pilot bushings mushroomed inward due to fautly installation before....if thats the case you'll never get it in....will have to replace the bushing again.

The pilot bushing should be seated pretty deep in the engine. Because the rod in the tranny must go into the hole the pilot bushing is in, if the pilot bushing is stuck near the front of the hole, the rod cannot fully insert itself. Get socket small enuff to fit into the hole but big enuff to push the pilot bushing in. Tap it in deeper with a hammer so that it allows the rod to further penetrate the engine. From here on out, once you get the tranny up, you can turn the rod to mate to the engine by turning the crank pulley or by inserting the half shaft and turning it from there.
