Things to look for?

I think this is the best forum to post this. I'm planning on buying a s13 blacktop from a private party, and the engine cannot be started up, nor do i know that it even works, im just going off what the guy told me. He said he got rear ended so he decided to take out the engine, sold his shell, and now is selling this complete swap for $1600. Said the engine works perfectly fine, and has only had it about a couple months. What are some things i should look for when checking this engine out? Things that might give it away that its not working, or could have problems? And do you guys think its worth checking out tho he can't do a start up for me?

Thanks! :]

- How does it look. No oil or stains around seals. Condition of hoses, etc.
- Check the condition of the spark plugs.
- You CAN do a compression test just need to bring the tester and a battery along.
- You can buy a motor set from a reputable vendor for about that price. I'd give Marco at the SR20store a call. My brother paid around that much for his blacktop a few years ago.
