Exhaust question

Installed a divided turbo elbow (generic XS power), 3" test pipe, and custom 3" exhaust on my SR'd S13 (already had a 3" DP). I bought the exhaust used from a local guy; it's 3" piping up front, welded to an HKS Hi-Power rear section. It does have a resonator welded into it.

And it is fucking loud as hell. At idle it sounds great, really deep rumble, but under acceleration...Jesus. Just rolling around town and staying out of boost, it's just obnoxious. Really drones at lower RPMS, between 1.5K and 3K. Oddly enough though, at higher RPMS and WOT it's not too loud, sounds really good.

Is there any reason not to think that cuttting out a section of the exhaust and welding in another 3" muffler would help quiet it down a good bit? I like the way it sounds, it just needs to be about 20 decibels quieter for around-town driving

No, go ahead and weld in a round muffler (magnaflow's are good) to quiet it down. It will definitely quiet it down...maybe just a 14" length one?

are you sure there isn't a leak somewhere causing the loudness. HKS hi power mufflers are supposed to be quieter than most 240sx exhaust systems out there. HKS just has a deep grunt. Not loud at all.

Really? That doesn't look like it would quiet it down much This one looks decent: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Also, could the fact that I have a test pipe, rather than a cat, make my exhaust a lot louder? I didn't really think of that...

Any additional muffling will have additional quieting properties, the specific amounts are left to your own personal preferences, mine is quiet enough for me.
Having a test pipe is probably another of your issues, as well.

Put the stock cat in or a high flow cat and it'll be pretty quiet. That's what I have right now and I want louder. I have the same cat back too.
