Ok me an my father just completed dropping an s13 sr20 motor in my 240sx. After driving around a little bit we noticed a strange grinding noise, almost like when you try and shift without pressing the clutch in all the way. We only here the noise occasionally though and only when going to into first gear or reverse. We also hear the noise slightly as idle sometimes but when u press in the clutch the noise goes away. What could this be? We know nothing is wrong with the gearbox because after the swap we got the car tuned and dyno and we out the gearbox through hell, this also eliminates the guess that there was a problem with the motor. My dad thinks that it could be the Throw out bearing but i just wanted to see what people on this board think. The TO bearing was working fine before the new sr install so i dont know why all of sudden something would happen to it.

Anyone know what this could be?

it must be clutch related. your dad might be right on the spot with his guess

Yea dog pretty sure your dads right, Throw out bearing would be most probley be it, cheap..but kinda time consuming replaceing it.now another test you coul do would be go to somewhere with walls so you could here better,like a garage,or drive thur, and push your clutch in an out see if the noise stops when you push the clutch in, that would be the throw-out. had this problem before not on my s13 but on my rex.

yeap. has to be the throw out bearing because once i installd my act extreme clutch and changed the bearing it made that noise goin into first and reverse

I have said this before and I will say it again, a throwout bearing does not make noise when the clutch pedal is not depressed because it should not quite be touching the clutch. If it has no freeplay then you will wear it out quickly. It is much more likely a transmission bearing, just because it used to work fine does not mean that it still does.

Exactly.

The TO bearing only makes noise when the clutch is depressed, because that is when it is riding on your pressure plate fingers.

More than likely it is an input shaft bearing to the trans, which happens to be fairly common on these trannys from my experience.
