Who says a KA can't rev high?
LOL
![]() Okay so seriously, I need to get my tach working right again. Sometimes it works, sometimes it works but twitches a bit varying around 200rpms off, sometimes it reads idle, and sometimes it ever so slowly climbs to how you see it. The motor in the car is a lower mileage KA, and the previous owner said someting about how the tach is getting the signal from the engine. What should I try, without fishing the gauge cluster out of the dash?

Eh... I wanna make sure that there isn't something loose on the motor or something first. And if the tach is bad, what can I do that doesn't require hunting down another SE cluster?

Pull out the gauge cluster. Takes 15 mins. Check all wires, tabs, needles.
Worste case, buy a new cluster.?

Should be on the pass side of the transmission.(Under the car)
a harness is ran to it. I think its like a 8-9mm bolt.(not sure)

Not on an S14 my friend. I don't even have a speed sensor and my tach works. Check the CAS on the top of the transmission right behind the engine. It measures the flywheel speed to show your RPM

On an S14 the RPM signal comes from the distributor (internal coil). Check your distributor plug and look for any pins that may not be making contact. I believe the problem itself may lie in that or your cluster. If you have a spare distributor, just install it and see if that's it. If it's not then it's the cluster. If that doesn't work then the problem must lie in the wiring itself. Download the FSM and check the wiring. That's what I'd do. Also, the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) does not read RPM. This was taken directly from the FSM: "The crankshaft position sensor (OBD) is located on the transmission housing facing the gear teeth (cogs) of the flywheel (driveplate). It detects the fluctuation of the engine revolution. The sensor consists of a permanent magnet, cor and coil. When the engine is running, the gap between the sensor and the gear teeth (cogs) will periodically change. Permeability near the sensor also changes. Due to the permeability change, the magnetic flux near the core is changed. Therefore, the voltage signal generated in the coil is changed. The ECM receives the voltage signal and detects the fluctuation of the engine revolution. The sensor is not directly used to control the engine system. it is used only for the on-board diagnosis of misfire." |

Yeah, my tach is bad. It broke today. It is stuck pegged out. Time for an aftermarket unit.

Just source a cluster here on zilvia. They usually run about 40-60 bucks. This guy is parting out his S14. Maybe he can help you out.
