starter relay problemos!
okay so last night.. car wouldn't start. full battery power. i can pushstart the car. i figure its gotta be something up with the starter system. i don't have the switch where i have to hold the clutch pedal down even though mine is a manual (stock, not converted) so i don't know if i still need to check the ASCD relay. two relays near my feet click when i attempt to turn the car on. starter is half new.. bought it in november. any idears?? i've tapped the starter just to see if it was stuck..still nothing. starter relay maybe?? where the eff is that thing anyway??
any thoughts would help. thankkkks |

no starter relays in the fuse box.. only thing that may relate is the ascd relay that i read up on. theres a starter signal fuse in the fuse box by my feet in the car but that one is good.

It's the damn ignition wire that attaches to the starter, that thing slips off all the time if you still have the stock harness attaching to it. I cut my harness and wired in a fuse connector, then clamped it down a bit with a pliers so its not going anywhere. Its the black wire with yellow stripe connecting to your starter.

Have you checked your ignition switch?? The START position on your ignition switch could have gone bad. Only way to test it is to remove the steering column cover from the steering column & disconnect the harness from the ignition wiring. Take a volt/ohm meter & see if you have continuity when you turn the key to the START position. If you show continuity, then plug everything back in, and test for 12 volts when you turn the key to the START position. If you DON"T get 12 volts when you turn the KEY to the START position, then chances are you need to replace the ignition switch.
1995-1998 Nissan 240SX Ignition Switch - Steering - OES Genuine 95-98 240SX Ignition Switch - 6630-01068729 - PartsGeek I've had this problem with my S14 along with a buddy of mine, so I'm familiar with this problem. Anyhow, hope this helps. ID

i did that. from behind the cylinder i have about 11 volts.. other side of the connector i only have about 10.. then i checked voltage down at the connector to the starter.. (black and yellow wire) nothin. but there's resistance... i had it starting for awhile but this morning it stopped again. so my next step is just to follow that black and yellow wire and see what the hell is wrong with it.

I am having the same exact problem on my 95. I still havnt found the problem, so I just rigged up a switch direct to the starter, the only problem with mine is that where i hooked for power, when I hit the switch the starter isnt getting all the power it needs cause of the electronics, i.e. constant fan, cd player, etc. So it has a little trouble starting. Sorry for the rant

check ALL your grounds guys, starters pull a lot of juice and if you have flaky connections other things will still work but the starter won't. mainly engine ground to chassis and battery ground cable.

The "solenoid" is a type of relay used to pull starter power straight from the battery, but it's not really called a relay. |

I fixed my problem, (dont know the name of the thing that i switched) but on the back of your ignition switch there is your "ignition selector" :/, unscrew it from your switch, use a screwdriver to turn the T, see if it starts it, if it does, then more than likely it could be bad, mine was hit or miss, so I replaced it, now it works fine.
