can i mount my s14 MAF vertically, just before the throttle body?

I think this would make for better overall fitment of my intake and IC piping. Is there any reason not to mount it vertically? And right before the throttle body?

If it's relevant, i have an s14 engine in an s13 chassis with a Blitz FMIC and stock s14 MAF.

That's not exactly true.

I know you didn't mention whether your 'S14 engine' was a SR20 or KA, but when you mount the MAF after the turbo, it's called a "blow through setup". Our MAFs are not designed to be run like this, (they're designed to be "pull through", aka mounted before the turbo) and it requires tuning to make it work right on the stock MAF or a Ford Cobra MAF (the more popular choice).

As far as vertical vs horizontal, that does not matter.

but if you dont mount it far enough from the turbo you will get funny signals it has so far downstream but i cant recall the minimum amount

also you can hack your maf to be a blow through set up. people that do it either swear by it or quickly return.

It does matter. As per mafs spec there MUST be 3" of straight pipe before and after the MAFS. Doesn't matter if you mount vertically or horizontally.

You're in the wrong class.

Any Nissan engine swap = SM...there is no other class that allows a SR swap. (EDIT: other than X-mod, and those wacko classes)

..or KA-T for that matter.

But, SCCA leaves classing up to the member, so they don;t have to correct you. Someday, someone who cares will be in DSP, and protest you.

The general rule of thumb is 18". 18" away from the throttle body, 18" away from the turbo inlet.

Not really. The distance is to decrease turbulence, figure any bend will give the same flow no matter what it is.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the thread. Good job, you want a cookie?

Oh shit, somehow i thought this thread got only one response and never looked at it till now!! Well, it's for an s14 sr20det, sorry if i wasn't clear about that.

I already ordered intake piping to accomodate the MAF just before the throttle body (vertically, starting just above the battery tray). Without measuring, it probably has 8"+ of straight pipe before it, an immediate 90-degree bend after it, and 14" or so total piping before the throttle body.

If i run it like this, is there any chance of damaging anything? The only 2 possibilities i can think of are if the MAF will be damaged by the blow-thru setup, or if it may somehow cause the engine to run lean. Are either of these possible? If it's safe, at this point i'd just figure nothing to lose, i can at least give it a try. What do you guys think?
