i dnot know of a proper tension. i put them on, then snugged it up. did it again at the track (sqeeling) for the PS one, then today doing the alternator and the AC belt. just dont OVER tighten them. snug. look in the FSM, has a small description of tension on it.

If you want, I can look it up later. I'm at work now.
I've got a Chilton manual (which kinda sux <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>) but it should have the tensions listed. I'll try to remember to post back tonight.

Okay, this is kinda vague, but maybe it will help.
the manual says to push on the belts with approximately 22lbs of force, (not sure how you know how hard you are pushing) then measure how far the belt moves. You are supposed to test it at a specific point. I'll try to scan the diagram and post it. Anyway, for a new belt it lists the following deflections: Gernerator & Powersteering & oil pump: 5-6mm or .20-.24 in Air conditioner & compressor: 6-7mm or .24 -.28 in

this pic shows where to measure the slack in each belt (the little triangles on middle diagram)
And the side diagrams show where the the adjusting bolts are for each belt. ![]() If you want I scanned the pages with all the diagrams and charts. You can see both pages here: Page 1 Page 2 The book covers the 240, and the altima, so only half of it is relveant.

a good rule of thumb for belts. You should be able to twist the belt upside down and not much farther. if you can twist past 180 degrees it's too loose, if you can't make twist at all, it's too tight.
If it is too tight you will know because it will eventually spit the belt out. too loose it will squeal.
