here is my problem....my car('92 240 se) has had some issues when it comes to starting. It does not do it everytime, but sporadically. Some of the time it will start right up and others it will do nothing. I tried to replace the starter but it did not correct the problem, I also checked the relays for neutral safety and cruise both were operational. When the car does not start all lights and instruments come on and I hear the solenoids under the hood click, although what I hear might be relays? I just want to have my reliability back, I cross my fingers each time I get in hoping it will turn over. I appreciate anyonr that might have some clues as to what might help the situation.......thank you

I believe I had the same problem on my 90' 240. Sometimes when you turn the key you just get a click from underr the hood? sometimes I would have to try 5-6 times then it would finally turn over. I too replaced the starter and it had no effect. It was extremely sporadic. unfortunatly, I never fixed it, and sold the car.

I thought it might be a relay?? no idea though. On mine I happened before and after I replaced the engine with a new remanufactured one..

Another possible common culprit for this problem is:

1) Bad ground
2) Weak battery

If your battery is old, try replace it with a higher ended battery with 600+ cold start cranking amps.

I won't say that's your problem, but we did have this problem before and swapped to a heavy duty high cranking amp battery, and the problem went away...

Tx.

when you say "bad ground" do you mean a bad ground on the ignition, or the battery?

Both. Clean the ground good and if your terminals on the battery look pretty corrosive, clean it with a brush.

However, the car that has this problem really solved the problem when we changed to those heavy duty dry cell batteries with 750 cold cranking amps. No more click clik click...start right up.

Some time it's not the starter, but voltage drop to the starter.

Tx.
