S13 cams

I want someone who knows for a fact to answer me this: Are all s13 DOHC cams the same, or are the 91's REALLY the only good s13 cams? And Are the 'other' s13 cams still an upgrade for an s14?

I didn't know 91s had specifically different cams... but the S13 DOHC cams have a higher duration than the S14 cams. The exhaust cam on the S13 is also slighter larger than the intake cam, so what you can do is run two S13 exhuast cams for a cheap upgrade for S14 motors. I could have mixed up the larger intake for the exhaust cam but its one of the two.

The '91 cam thing is from the old-and-outdated "FAQ" @ 240SX.org

'91 to Mid-93 cams are all the same, and are all 240/248 duration.

'94 S13 ('vert) and ALL S14 cams are 232/232.

The changeover was when the eliminated the SCV (secondary butterflies) form the intake manifold at some point in mid-1993.

So, S13 with SCV's = better cams. All '91 and '92's had the 'good' cams...and most the '93's.

That is all.

^ Exactly what he said.

SCVs = 240/248
No SCVs = 232/232

OKay, good. Cause I'm getting an s13 motor to swap into my s14. I'll be using my intake mani, alternator, and distributor. Long story short, I think my motor is a ticking timebomb and the headgasket is already blown. I can get an s13 motor which was rebuilt 60k miles ago for cheap. This means virtually no downtime, and a spare motor I can do whatever I want with, as opposed to sending the head to be machined and only doing the headgasket once.

Bumping for a random question. I'm still searching, have been for the last 10 minutes, but a buddy of mine needs an answer nowish. He's trying to assemble his motor.

Someone mixed the cams up when they dissassembled the KA. How do you tell which is intake and which is exhaust?

Thanks,
Bryan

^^^ NOT a good way to tell...they are opposite for S14 and S14.

The answer that I'm sure "upSLIDEdown" found...is that the intake cam is the one with the dowel pin lined up with the #1 cam lobe. I.E....if the #1 cam lobe is facing directly up, the dowel pin is in the 12 o'clock position.

S14 intake (232) - orange stripe, first lobe is aligned with the alignment pin
S14 exhaust (232) - green stripe, first lobe is about 4 teeth clockwise from the pin
S13 intake (240) - green stripe, first lobe is aligned with the pin
S13 exhaust (248) - orange stripe, first lobe is 4 teeth clockwise from the pin

I'm running 248/232 cams, here's what made me choose this setup.
