im trying to explain to someone exactly what the alphanumerics are and it hit me that I do not know what the meaning of X is.

Im assumin S and Z are related to the chassis but what does that X stand for

I could be wrong on this, but I thought it began with the changeover from the 280Z to the 280ZX, with the "X" to mean Luxury.

The appointments, compared to what came before them, were... This, of course, is speaking clearly in 1978 terms, not 2008.
Also, this was adopted when Nissan started to add "By Nissan" to the Datsun logo/name, so I am more than willing to bet that this had quite a bit to do with it too.

x it means we are have the bastard child version of all the nissan.
hence 240sx instead of the silvia, 300zx instead of the fairlady,

might not apply to the 180sx though. hahah

Maybe cuz 240S sound kinda stupid.... And i think it has something to go with the fact Nissan started making ZX's after Datsun. ZX's had more options im pretty sure. Sinc the 240 has a lot of options compared to the older Z, maybe thats why its an SX.

I always thought the "x" meant "export". So the 300Z became the 300ZX when it came here. The Silvia became the 240SX which to me meant 2.4l Silvia export. I'm most likely wrong but it makes sense to me, and because there is no rep anymore I'll type whatever the fuck I want to.

I remember hearing that it meant "Luxury" too back when I had a 300ZX. Shit, leather seats and a sweet ass knight rider digital dashboard, that shit had luxury to the GILLS.

Wikipedia confirms X means Luxury, but it's Wikipedia so take what you will from that.

I do know that with the early "Z" cars, the "X" was the luxury models

. I would guess since they started calling all "Z" cars "ZX" it was just a selling point to a cheaper sports car...to seem you were getting a luxury model car. My 2 cents
