Why Won't You Budge?!

Okay I am removing the exhaust from the exhaust manifold and 2 of the 3 nuts came off like butter then the last one won't budge. I sprayed it with multiple types of sprays such as wd40, liquid wrench and another one the name slips from my head. Getting up into that area isn't exactly the most roomy of places either so does anyone have any ideas that wont damage the studs on the exhaust manifold.

EDIT: I've been using an impact wrench.

just wrech it off and if the stud comes out then rethread it in it should be just like a head stud.

try using a torch to heat it up, remember when metal gets heated up it expands.

Hmm I never even thought about trying out a torch, may be a very tight squeeze though.

I'm pullin the engine and selling it to make room for the new engine that will be going in. I don't want to damage anything like that so I can get some decent money on this to put towards the project.

yup, your gunna need to heat it up. Also dont be afraid to use force, if you break the stud, oh well. Just drill it out and put a bolt in its place.

Try and get a breaker bar on it

You can put more torque on it then the Impact Gun

Agreed. Best way to get at it is to heat it up with a torch. Good Luck

I'll pick up a torch tomorrow then after I get it red hot I'll toss the impact on and hopefully it'll melt off like butter. Grr this is the only thing holding me back from pullin the darn engine tomorrow If it doesn't come off I may shed a tear.

A regular propane torch wont get it red hot, but should get it hot enough to make the nut expand enough to twist off. did you try using PBP blaster? that stuff really helps. what you should do is put that stuff on and leave it for about 30 min then try to wrench it off, if not, then use the torch, if that doesnt work, then put the PBP blaster on then wait like 5 mins then heat that stuff up along with the nut.

most importantly, be careful

it will suck it it snaps off. my old s14 was a bit rusty on the cat/exhaust flange. one bolt ended up snapping. i had to drill that out in a 20 degree garage, took forever. so try your best not to have anything like that happen lol. good luck.

It was the sucker furthest away from the motor and in the most awkward position of the 3. I was actually expecting a bad outcome of the situation but sometimes after so many things going wrong somethings gotta go right.
