That engine was tranverse mounted (sideways for FWD) in all applications, even AWD... the work that would go into custom making that work would be far more than a simple SR swap or turbo KA...

i would say 3-4k will get you a pretty poopy swap. mind you i've never done it, nor do i know anybody that does it. but considering that the engine itself costs almost 3k, i don't see how you can get it done for 3-4. all too often people ignore the little costs that are associated with these things, such as fluids, mounts, gaskets, etc. not to mention shipping, downtime, and other unexpected costs. when taking on a project like this, it's safe to say that you can estimate your cost, then multiply it by 1.5-2 to get your REAL cost.

Theres a guy in the chat section, maybe tech section that can get an engine for about $1800, then add on maybe 2-300 for fluids/oils and what not and small extra parts. And he charges $700 to do the labour. If you help him out, then he'll do it for about $300.

boys, gentlemen..
I direct your attention to a little site I like to call EBAY. Ebay motors has got you covered for J-spec engines that come from companies. You set your limits and just wait, or bid as high as you want. Check it out, SR engines cheaper than you guys think. I was thinking, what about an RB26DETT drop into an S14?

Jellybean- if your KA is still healthy a low boost turbo could be done for your allotted budget with greater ease IMO. Plus it allows for more time to acquire and upgrade in peices. A turbo, now, an intercooler later (plus they fit in your living room better while they await installation). The SR is one pretty big chunk of change in itself. Eiether way, don't cheap out. There's a big difference between low cost and cutting corners. The latter tends to bite you in the ass down the road, the former requires greater knowledge of a complicated subject. I suggest reading Maximum Boost before tackling a turbo project on your own should you go that route.

Yeah, I thought about going slow, I would start with injectors and a safc then go on from there like the next step.
edit-- Ime almost ready to buy a car, Ime still decideing to get a gst eclipse(2gen) or a 240sx. I really want a 240sx because its not a child car like the eclipse, that and everyone and there mom has a eclipse. Last edited by JellyBean; 01-21-2003 at 10:38 AM.. |

jellybean try ebay for your needs. Turbo's aren't hard to find and usually are cheap. If you run higher boost don't remember to build the bottom end.

Just so you know.
A turbo timer doesn't cool the motor down. It cools the oil flowing into the turbo down. So it'd be pretty useless in a NA car. Sometimes the oil gets coked up in the bearing section of the turbo turning all gooey and crap and breaking things. rarley does this ever happen, but it's always nice to have a turbo timer just as peice of mind. Especially after driving the car hard for a while. |

Are you in the habit of parking the car HOT? Unless you tear ass around town and shut it down right away, you're not in any need. Just be prudent about your driving, take the last minute or two easy and if need be, let it idle a few extra seconds before shutting down (usually wait till I'm ready to get out before I shut off the car). Also consider that cars need time to warm up as well. Especially in the cold. Give it some time before heading out and I like to keep the revs below 3k until the temp needle has begun to rise.

Well, usually I tear around town, I never start a race but if someone revs near me its on, especialy when Ime cruisin and IC a ricer, I will usuall go from 4th to 3rd to 2nd and gun it till I redline then switch. Ime use to my 3000gt it goes 1st 1-45 2nd 45-95 3rd 95-127 and 4th and fifth I use never when I race. But yeah I gun it alot, and I am planning on getting turbo and I want to be ready for turbo, so I want everything in, like the safc, injectors, waldro pump, turbo timer and so on. Then when its got the compression I want I gonna add turbo.

The point of a turbo-timer is to keep the engine on to keep the oil circulating through the engine AND the turbine. From hard running, the turbine generates tremendous heat. If the car is shut off right after driving, the oil in the turbine will stay in there and the heat will boil the oil and create a sorts of sludge in it. The turbo-timer keeps the oil moving so that the turbine can be cooled down to a level where it won't be too hot.

on second thought, i should encourage people to take on the "under 3k swap" so when they run out of money, i buy the car from them dirt cheap and finish the project. then i'd rip around for a bit, then sell the car for a decent profit.
