ECU questions

hello everyone,
i have a jwt tuned ecu, It has a JWT sticker, that says
Jim Wolf Technology
P.O.P Upgrade Package
89-90 240sx MT SR20det
370c INJ 89-90 KA24E MAF
Base Timing 15btdc, 18mmZR02

and a The nissan Sticker says
73
A11-A42 G41
i looked up what this goes in on this page,
http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/wolfpdf/ECU-ID.PDF
and it belongs to no suprise, a 89 240sx , who woulda guess any how heres my situation.

I have a 91 240sx, with a sr20de+t distributor ran motor.
this ecu listed above runs my engine, but the timing is very very very retarded, at best i can advance it to 25 degrees btdc.

I called jwt and explained this to them and they said its because the 89-90 240s, and the 91 240sx use a different c.a.s , (ok this i knew) but my question is, what does this have to do with the sr20, if it came from jwt and ran a sr20det in a 89 240sx, and im tryin to run a sr20det in my 91 240sx why wont it work. Same engine,? unless this ecu is made for a direct ignition sr20det which in that case i thought it shouldnt be able to run a distributor based sr20det, but this would make sense, sort of, maybe the c.a.s in a direct ignition sr20det, and a distributor sr20de are just different enough , that me running a sr20det ecu on my sr20de+t motor would cause the problem im having,. i might have sounded confusing any ideas anyone?
