garrett t3/to4e vs gt3071r

Having the same bolt patterns, a/r, and flow capacity how differently do these turbos operate spool wise? Is it worth it to drop the extra initial investment to get the gt3071r? I'm trying to weigh options between spool time and over all lifespan of the turbo, if any of you have info; dyno's etc, help me out, thanks.

Biggest thing will be the pros and cons of having a ball bearing turbo and a non-ball bearing. Ball bearing ones have a tendency to spool up sooner (less lag) and make a bit more power. The catch is you cant rebuild ball bearing turbos and you have to run a water line. Rebuild kits for a typical T3/4 setup is about $80-100 bucks. You blow a ball bearing turbo, youre pretty much buying a new CHRA (pretty much a new turbo minus the housings).

thanks for the great info, I'm looking to find out more about how fast these two turbos will reach full boost compared to one another, and at what rpm that can be achived

BALL BEARING doesnt necessarily spool sooner... its mostly noticable on and off the throttle. - if you're doing pulls on the highway - you wont notice it spooling sooner.

also the design has a lot to do with it. non BB GT turbos spool earlier than pre GT series garretts.

BW and Holset spool remarkably fast and are journal bearing.

Im talking similar spec, I know garret started making ballbearing CHRAs for the older style T3/4 turbos. Spools roughly 500 rpm sooner in most cases that the older bush bearings. I was contemplating on doing this on a TO4 turbo on my SR, changed my mind real quick when I remembered I gotta run water lines again...

Strait BS. Ball bearing turbos will spool between 100-300 on the smaller turbos. My friend had a journal bearing t3/t4, then went with the same spec ball bearing t3/t4 and was so pissed off because he couldnt even tell the difference in spool up time.

Older bushing bearings?! Dude, ~90 percent of the worlds turbos are made with journal bearings. They are fine. Borg Warner makes sooo many more turbos than Garrett, and they dont even waste their time with ball bearing turbos.

GT-R/ball bearing is just the hype. In reality the Borg Warner S series owns them in almost every way. On the larger framed turbos, the reduction of mass on the borg warner compressor wheel in respect to the GT-R series wheels makes the turbos spool up as fast. On the huge turbos the BW spools faster.

OP - If your looking at a gt30-R, do some research on a borg warner S25x turbo. Borg warner S series > GT-R Imho.

I have a t3/04e 50 trim on my KA and its spools like perfect, the RPM depends on the gear and load but I have positive boost around 3k and 20psi before 4k, but not sure about an SR

plus the manifold makes a difference, cams, intercooler, exhaust, etc. there is just to many factors

well the gt3071r is always being advertised as spooling 1000rpm faster than the previous gt models, but from what I read I guess the specs between a t3/t04e and gt3071r are pretty much the same [max flow], I would have liked to run a twin scroll gt3071r but I ended up going with a hybrid dynamics kit, I'd like to get the turbo for the best spool for dd purposes

GT3076R > GT3071R

Go with that instead.

<---gt30/76r FTMFW, one of the best 400+hp turbo out

people talk about ball bearing turbo's being bad cause you can't rebuild them......they're designed to last a lot longer than journal turbos.....the only reason you'd blow up a ball bearing turbo is if 1. you don't have the correct oil restrictor in the oil feed. 2. you don't have a good free flowing oil drain, 3. something got caught in the turbo that shouldn't have (ie a peice of weld or valve or something lol)

other than that. your ball bearing turbo should outlast the abuse you put on your motor an easy 2 to 1 therefore putting the "can't rebuild them" idea into the moot point category.

the only t3/t04e's i see are turbonetics ones...and i have yet to see one that makes more power or spools faster than a gt30r. i'm not a fan of t3/t4's
