fuel guage problem??
ok so i noticed that after yesterdays drift event my gas needle doesnt move. it stayed at a little above half a tank. and it was working perfect before. any ideas? maybe the gas moving inside the tank is a factor?

its called owning a 10-19 year old car that has had shitty gas put in it its whole life...deposits build up on the little metallic reading unit attached to the floater and they just tend to wear themselves out
best suggestion i can give to you is go to the junk yard...pull a sending unit from a wrecked 240 and see if it works...i seriously doubt you want to spend the money at the dealership to buy a new one (im guesing they would be around 500-1000 monies) my 240 has a really bitchy sending unit floater...but ive had that happen in ALL the 240s ive owned...it likes to lose its reading around half a tank and just moves up and down between half full and completely empty as im driving around...works fine up until that point (like if i have a full tank of gas) but yah...old car = shit likes to stop working because its OLD!!!! |

OK so I did a search and instead of starting a new thread Im just gonna ask here:
So ive noticed that on my 95 the gas gauge fluctuates almost a quarter tank. Especially when I take long on/off ramps. Sometimes it will rise back up but sometimes it will drop and stay. My friend's guage in his 13 stop working then start back up again but mine just runs all over the place. Anyone else had a problem like mine? Is my problem the same faulty component as stated above? thanks |

There has been a thread about this before... I can't speak on the S14 issue cuz they use a different sending unit than the S13. But I do know that the S13 tank has a metal baffle that likes to comes loose, when it does it usually gets stuck under the float arm on the sending unit and causes it to stick or stay in one position. Sometimes it will break the sending unit and in my case it shorted out my fuel pump.
Pop the cover open and take a look inside, should take you about 15 mins. |

S14s do it too, though not as common, the sending unit falls loose in the tank and floats around.

mines similar on my 91
First gauge when full would go past Full and empty was at 1/4 of a tank (Found that out the hard way) Switched the gauge out with another worked great for a while, now with a full tanks it stops betwen Full and 3/4 reads 1/2 with 12 gallons but becomes accurate below 1/2 a tank

well I took out my fuel pump today and moved the little floater actuator thing back and forth a few time. I reconnected the wires and started the car up and the needle went up to about half a tank, which is about what I was guessing I had so i guess that solved the problem. Just a heads up to those who may wana give that a shot, only took about 20 minutes.

Its a good idea to remove the sending unit and with some very fine sand paper sand the electrical contacts on the sweeper arm contact thingy, I've done this on just about every nissan I owned and it fixed inaccurracy problems with teh fuel gauge.
