tach and clock problem???

yeah i was driving home with my s14 every things working like a charm....and then all of a sodden the tach just drops at like 500 rpm and just bounces up to 1000rpm and my clock isn't working but theres still a like the background light on

i tried shutting the car off and on
pulled the cluster out and took every thing apart to see and clean
i tried searching on the net
i put a cheap ricer tach on my dash and thats working fine

so im thinking that it might bee the tach itself but want to make sure before i buy another tach or cluster

any way thanks for all your help

Two completely different circuits, the clock and tach. Check all fuses.
