My trunk is a freakin pool...

i have some hatch rust and the other day i went to get the chiltons out of my trunk and it happened to be soaking wet... since it was almost 60 today i decided to take out my spare and see just how bad the leak was, i found probably 1-1.5 inches of water just sittin in my damn spare well. along with a soaking wet carpet and condensation all over the place.

so anyways, i e-mailed a junkyard about a half hour away about a hatch i found through car-parts.com. the guy was real nice and gave me a call back this morning about it. basically its a red hatch without a spoiler and with a wiper. i know there isnt much to paint really, but how much do you think it would cost to get it painted black from red? the hatch itself is $50, and i'm going to pick it up myself so no shipping. i'm not sure when i'm gettin it put on, i need to find a spoiler like i first because i don't care much for the spoielrless look and i think the 180 type X spoiler is a little too big and tall for my tastes.

summary: new hatch, red, $50, how much to get painted black, any subtle spoilers that aren't too expensive (lip would be nice too)

Are you sure its not the seals around the hatch that need replaced?

Given the small area, the shop will still probably charge you for a full quart of paint. it depends on what type of black you need since there's about 100 different types of black paint out there. If it's pearl, it'll cost more again. Plus labor.....

The best you can do is just take it around to shops to get estimates.

yeah, you could be having some water come through the rust holes, but i would think that the bulk of it may be from the seals on the hatch, being in the colder months the seals tend to not work as well, lettin water and such leak in. I say this cause even with my new hatch (replaced my rust bucket), i still got a lil bit of water here and there.

It's amazing how they all rust the same way. Even the bigger rust hole is on the same side that mine was. Right now my hatch is bondo'd up, but i'm going to get a new one sometime soon. I'd love to find a black one, but good luck, hehe.

i suggest prepping the car for paint and taking it to a maaco or some other discount paintshop...
their main flaw is they dont prep properly so if you do it they'll charge less and you can get a decent matching paint job.

as for the spoiler...fastbacks look amazing with wangan wings. but if you want something more subtle than the huge 180sx spoiler, don @ PDM sells a great clean looking spoiler for $250

yeah, i had the same problem a couple of weeks ago... i needed a breaker bar that was in the cubby hole with the spare tire... reached in to find i had enough water in my trunk to drown a small child. a wet/dry vac did the trick and my carpet is still in the drying process. those damn nissan engineers, they never thought about rust...

I found a one at the junkyard for $100 in the same color and w/ a wiper. The install was way to easy and I have no more pools of water in my trunk.

The lid is where my leak was coming from and now the problem is solved

How do i prevent the rust from coming?

What model years does it happen on? all up to 93? or just 89-90

If you have a hatch lid w/ a foam spoiler then you have a very good chance of having a rust problem. Some that are garage kept can avoid the rust but mine isn't one of those fortunate 240s

i'm not sure how to prevent it, my hatch was perfect till just over 2 years ago. hell i thought i had avoided the hatch rust somehow... then the bubbles started forming pretty slowly, but once they opened up all hell breaks loose on your hatch. i tried putting rust convertor on the spot earlier on but it was a losing fight. u can see on my hatch how the left side isn't bad, it didn't start bubbling till probbaly 2 months ago but its already starting to stain as u can see. i expect it to be pretty bad and noticable by the end of summertime

an update: i called another junkyard hoping to find a black hatch, but theres was red as well and they wanted $175 for the same thing!!
