I am wondering how everybody matches the rite RPM for the downshift....Do you do it by the sound of the engine?Or are you looking at the tach and if so how do you know where the RPM's should be?

yeah i use both ways too, but after awhile if really concentrating on it, it just comes naturally. my biggest problem is getting a comfortable setup for my feet on the pedals

once you practice it enough, its just 2nd nature

practice when comign to stop signs, lights, on freeway, etc etc. make it a habit. you'll learn it pretty fast, its much easier then some think.

I started doing it shortly after I got my 240. And now I cant drive around without doing it. Its second nature.

both. rev match on corners etc..but if your talking that Initial D ****..i cant do that well

When I first started doing it I looked at the tach, which helped until i could get a feel for it. Once you get faster and smoother you'll want to just go by sound. Just practice whenever you can, it took me about a year until I was really comfortable doing it around town and driving hard. Just don't get frustrated when you screw up.

I rev match all the time. When I heel toe though, I brake with the left side of my right foot and blip the throttle with the right side. Does anyone else do this? I wonder if this is a really bad habit to get into?

yeah it is frustrating sometimes......but after a while I get it so i can do it quite well, but then the next day I have somehow lost the 'touch' again....But thats getting less and less. After a while of driving I can easily rev match by sound. The other thing is foot placement, lately I have been using the heel and toe, but before I always used sidestep method. With the heel and toe my braking is more controlable but feels a little awkward.

I cant spell either.....

you guys that are heel&toeing are double-clutching on the downshift too, right?

i basically double-clutch + heel&toe everytime i'm slowing down, just out of habit (1990 Audi 90). every stoplight, corner, whatever

and yes, i use the left half of my foot to brake and blip with the right half of my foot b/c German cars have near-perfect pedal setups

don't have to stick my foot sideways to reach both pedals....

no point to double clutch if your syncros are still good. And even if they went the rev matching helps that out.

Edit: oh yeah, and I listen to the revs more than looking at the tach.

And I dbl clutch into 1st always.

Edit: Once you heel/toe long enough you'll develop an ear for the rpm and won't need the tach, until then check the tach.

thats true, i double clutch when I downshift to first as well.

I wasnt thinkin about the 1st gear d/shift.

I'd love to heel-toe but my legs are too long.. But I started practicing the rev match anyway in hopes that I can get the seats moved back in the future. I noticed after a while that I can rev match without even thinking of it and usually get it right. It just becomes 2nd nature over time.

Chances are you're too close to the front and the seat back is too close to vertical....try moving back an inch or two and tilting the seat back a bit (forces your butt forward to reach...)

I'm set up so that I can just barely touch the floor w/ the clutch if I really stretch, perfect because I only drop the clutch 1.5-2" to the clutch point.

I am as far back in the seat as possible.. I do have the seat very upright, not all the way in the 90 degree position but close. I don't think the angle of the seat will help me have any room. I'm 6'3" and I would need to move the seat back about 3" to have my legs even close to straight. I just put S14 seats in and they appear to be hitting the seat belt reel so I'm going to be removing that and putting in S14 belts in hopes that I get the seat to slide back just a bit further. Even with the S13 seats, I tried many different positions and it's a bit tight but it was easier to move my leg then than it is now. Space is in short supply in the 2 cars I own

I understand the long leg delima.. the steering wheel in the 240 doesn't leave a lot of room for tall guys.. I'm 6'4" and my right leg hits the steering wheel when I try to heel toe.

I'm gonna get a steering wheel spacer, and move the seat back a bit when I get some new seats. I have the s14 seats in my s13, and I noticed I don't sit back quite as far anymore.. I need to check and see if I'm hitting the seat belt spool too..

Ah so I'm not alone!! I'll report here when I get my S14 belts in.. I'm really hoping it helps get me just a little more room.

I have been trying to heel and toe for a month now and sometimes I get the hang of it. I have also feel comfortable doing heel and toe the opposite way. But I have a question for yall. Do yall put the steering wheel all the way up, because I can do heel and toe that way, but it is kind of retarded to because the steering wheel is so high?

I know this is so basic, but I found it so much easier to heel & toe down after I took out the stock floormat. My heel can now easily slide over to blip without having to drag across carpet since now its just the smooth vinyl heel pad. It helps when you're 6'2" and have a hard time wrenching your leg and foot around in a confined space.

I do rev match to save wear and tear on my clutch and engine but I can't heel/toe to save my life. I just need to practice more.
