Angry Good job drifters!

You made yourselves known at the last local autocross! The event chair made sure to mention, during the driver's meeting, that autocross events are not setup for 'drifting'; the 'drifting' (frequently followed by an out-of-control spin) slows the event. The objective of autocross is to drive the course as fast as possible. No style points.

Drifting techniques can successfully be applied to autox and be faster, depending on traction factors.

EDIT: let me clarify that, I'm not saying you should swing the tail out on every turn, but things like increasing radius turns and hairpins, drifting can be advantageous, depending on the car, and amount of available traction.

AH why do the ricers do such stupid stuff like that?! ack. im sorry to hear that. auto-x isnt the place to learn drifting, its not for that unless they allow it (which they dont)

that sucks. bleh.

more reason people HATE 'drifters' (and i use that term LIGHTLY)

Do it when it is allowed! In a place it is allowed!

You would not go into a supermarket doing funny things to a goat's bunghole with your 11th finger.

You take it to the petting zoo.

Thats stupid, most of the experienced drivers i see use oversteer techniques and slides to their advantage. Granted, they're not trying to "drift" but the results are the same when you screw up ("out of control spin"). Are they going to get a slap on their wrist?

How are they going to eliminate the presence of "drifting"? what kind of subjective no spin rules are they going to impliment? **** like that meant to prevent the newbies from doing stupid things usually hurt the experienced drivers/point card holders in the end.

Oh, ricers usually don't frequent autocrosses. The ones who do, after a day's work realize that they are full of ****, they talk too much smack, their car got beat by a stock miata, and don't come back.

also, autocross is not even close to being a good place to learn drifting. Too few runs, too much wasted time if you don't actually care about driving faster.

my two cents... this reminds me, i haven't gone autocrossin' in months... ah, crap, today was an event, and the next event is april 6ths... oh well.

There's a difference between a little left foot brake to get your car to rotate around a tight corner, and hanging it all out to show off. Like the guy said, "no style points."

It's pretty easy to tell when someone is "show drifting". There's a proper time and place for everything. Drifting at an autocross is inappropriate. Just the same as driving a fast grip line and stuffing someone up the inside at a drift event.

If you want to drift and your track doesn't offer a drift session, and you can't drift at auto cross events, look into drift sessions... there are plenty of tracks across the country starting to offer not only drift sessions but also drifting seminars and drift competitions. I know it isn't big on the east coast yet, but drift mania is spreading across the country, and I think many tracks might be willing to accommodate the drifters and the autocrossers.
As far as how they make the distinction, I'm guessing its the same as a golf course. When the management sees someone hacking, they ask them to leave the course. When the management sees a problem driver, they black flag them and ask them to leave the track.
so if you were really oversteering to go faster, they probably wouldn't mind, but if you were consistantly sideways and obviously not caring about times they might ask you to leave.

wait a minute, if you pay to "race" on the track, who cares how you do it? the point is to have fun, see what you can do, to learn about your car, your self, (the list goes on) . . . am i right? I have autoX'ed once, i loved every minute of it, its a lot of fun, (damn ace called and messed with my train of thought) anyhow, you get the point. . .

my .02

Edit: i know PJ will post this, so i will before he can, when we went to that autoX, i did a "fast time" and he spun out and still beat my "fast time" thats bad. . . but fun;-) oh yeah, we were in his car. . . not my wrx (cause then he would be done)

That is a totally unorganized way of going about things. Why not just let everyone go from a shotgun/motocross start and have at it? Beginners to advanced drivers. That'd be a hoot.

Like I said before, there is a time and place for everything. Drifting at a grip event is not one of them. Neither is "grip" driving at a drift event. It is up to the race steward/event director to lay out the guidelines and up to the patrons to respect them.

exactly ruf.

i've seen drifters at grip and vise versa. its not cool and people are ****ED. nothing like a drifter taking a corner sideways when you go balls out gripping the same corner, and a gripper coming in fast from behind when your completely sideways.
ends up having a group meeting mid day and losing a good hour or so re-organizing and discussing/bitching/moaning.

after that day, there are "car control group C" at speedtrials at most every Speedtrials event.
