should i buy a 97 240sx and swap a sr20det?

currently, i have a 1999 eclipse GS-T, its a great car, its my baby, but ive been consumed by the speed, looks and robustness of the sr20det,

ive considered selling my car for about 14-15 grand, (1999, 33k miles, no accidents) with about $4-5000 worth of mods for about maybe....3 grand, or whatever the best price i can get.... leaving me with about 17-18 grand to work on a 240sx,

i'm looking into a 1997 black 240sx, 42,000 miles (regardless), auto (which can be changed) for about 9-10 grand,

i've looked into some sr20det engine prices, but i hear different things...

how come have you guys spent on a complete engine swap????sr20det, transmission, stock turbo, ecu, harnesses, etc.

and how much is the price difference in a new and used engine?

this is tearing me apart, i'm a college student, and maybe i shouldn't be focusing on cars too much, but who doesnt? hahaha please reply, let me know, and tell me how good the 240 with sr20det is... haha

a 97 for 9-10gz?? thats very rare considering when i was looking for a 97-98 they were about 13gz.

use the edit button

use the search.. there was a thread asking how much people spent on the SR and a lot of SR owneres posted how much they spent.

I don't know why you would want to scrap the KA motor with only 44K miles. That seems like a waste. You can get equal, if not more power by turbocharging the engine already in the car. I'm not sure how much a swap will cost, but for the same price as the swap you could be pushing 300+ whp in the KA24. But the decision is yours, this is only my view on it.

A lot faster 4G63's out there than SR20DET's.

s13 - (black & redtop)
Horsepower: 205ps at 6000rpm

s14 -
Horsepower: 220hp at 6000rpm
Torque: 203 ft/lbs at 4800rpm

s15 -
Horsepower: 250ps at 6000rpm

was looking at the s15, looking around $6000? advantages to 240sx are RWD, i like the body styling, nissan engines are robust, no crankwalk,

basically i've done research, just trying to find some input from current owners,

never driven one, but ive ridden in s15, with 15 psi, fast as hell, thats all i can say,

also, there are a lot of 240s out there that are faster than some DSMs,

There arent a lot of successful S15 swaps, and they're kind of pointless anyway.

Have you driven a 240 and did you like it?
Honestly a stock SR/240 is like a stock GS-T.
A SR/240 with 5 grand in upgrades is like a GS-T with 5 grand in upgrades.
Knowledge is power- you KNOW you should be doing a couple hours/days/weeks/months of searches (especially on freshalloy.com) to come to your own decision.

We all hypothesize about owning different cars/setups.
I've been thinking about a sleeper '93 Impreza w/'02 WRX swap.
But I didn't go to I-Club and start asking stupid questions- I did my own research.
They might be the same, but RWD is much more fun to drive. Thus, better suspension too. Also, the 240sx is much much lighter than the 240sx. I used to have a 97 Eclipse (non-turbo) Now that I have my 240, im so much happier. I suggest you go for it, but be prepared to be carless (unless you got a beater) for a month or two

That car isn't an S15... just an S14 with some stuff bolted onto it.

All the SR engines have equal ultimate potential for power... once you get to the point of changing turbos the S15's advantage disappears.

Better to get an S14 or S13 engine and add an S15 turbo or aftermarket rather than going through the extreme hassle of adapting the S15's engine management. The 6 speed sucks too (IMO, gear ratios too close).

It's your call... the 240SX is not a cost effective route to speed. I enjoy mine because it's a blast to drive even at 140hp. If that matters to you more than going FAST then by all means, trade up from your DSM.

If I were you, since you already know a bit of the DSM life, I would get a GSX, or an AWD talon, and get the 4G63 from an EVO, I would assume it would be the same deal as the SR into a 240, but I don't know much about the swap.

I would think that a 4G63 could get more power easier than an SR, I have seen more powerful Eclipses, but I guess thats cuz there are more eclipses than 240s.

But if you really want to do an SR swap, I wouldn't do it on a 97-98, thats a waste of a somewhat new engine. If you don't want to go KA-T, then just get some 95-96 and do an S14 blacktop swap, you can do a kouki conversion if you really want too.

EDIT: BTW it says he is selling his car for 13K, so I would call and ask whats the deal?

A 240SX cost ALOT of money to mod.

So have atleast $16,000 on hand for a 97/98 240SX with S14 SR20DET (w/FMIC and BOV).

Honestly if I had 14 grand.....I would get a WRX (finance the rest) or put a down payment on a 350Z or G35 Coupe/Sedan (w/ 6 speed).

the answer is no

it sounds like your car is in mint condition.. 33k miles?.. oh my..

you basically want to sell your car and buy another car with the same amount of money, has more mileage, will be slower than what you have, AND IT HAS AN UNKNOWN ENGINE HISTORY LIFE..

but youll get this.. rwd and be uber cool with an sr20det in your 240sx.. well not so uber anymore!

4g63 is a bad ass motor, at least EQUAL to potential of an sr20det..

and dont forget, you ever total your car or get it stolen, there goes your 5000 engine investment..

which equates to a not so economically sounding investment..

I've wondered that myself. I did a quick search.

uber-, or just plain "uber", is a bastardization of the German prefix über-, meaning above. It was probably anglosized during WWII, when the American troops compared the "capo", or "head", and the "übercapo", or "overhead". Not having a degree in German, they probably decided über- meant "extra special". Hence the English meaning of uber: cool, excellent, special, big, or something thereabouts.

A slang word used by homosexuals... means "very" usually referring to "very gay".

LOL.

I know someone selling a 95 SE with everything for $3000.

My 97/98 front end conversion cost me $2100 (including paint).

So....do the numbers and figure out what you want to do.

I'm in Woodbridge......so its not THAT far from you.

GT Spec R is right, you can find hella good deals on 95-96 5 speed, if you do the front end conversion and you want to get that jdm look make sure you come by the actual jdm kouki headlights, the jdm 97-98 is different from us 97-98. But its all in your opinion of what you want on the car.
