Another alternative for a cracked dash

Strip that shit!! Sorry if this was already done but in all the years I've been into s-chassis cars I haven't seen this before so I thought I'd share.

Why do s13 dashes crack? Because they are made with PANCAKE batter:

Almost done:

Don't mind the wet look, It's goo gone to get all the shit off. We colleected all the shit we scraped off and weighed it. That shit weighed 8lbs!

Opinions?

I'll be doing that soon, mine just cracked this summer. I'll probably hit it with some flat black to finish it out.

I never really thought about this option. My perfectly good black dash, just finally got its firs crack. When I get the time, I'm definitely gonna do what mehsilvia did and flock my dash.

Search: Flock or Flocking

Norm ~

Looks like you put syrup on then pancakes

Im interested to see how well that cleans up. Keep us updated as to whether or not its smooth enough to refinish (paint or flock) or if it requires a reall good sanding, etc . . .

Might be a good alternative to just coating moar shit over the vinyl/pancake, and risking cracks down the road again.

my question is that since it is smaller, how is it going to fit to the rest of the interior.

Finish it and put it back into the car.

yeah its not that bad, just don't forget the hardware hidden in the defroster vents (and be careful taking them out, they snap easily.)

you can buy a fresh dash at a junkyard for 20 bucks. an uncracked junkyard dash also has the bonus of looking "not like a piece of shit".

Agreed, although they are hard to find. I'm just providing another alternative. Every dash will eventually crack due to it being 15-20 years old.

It actually looks pretty decent stripped. It's very light and...it wont crack

Have you fitted it back in the car to see if there are any noticeable or unappealing gaps anywhere?

I'll be doing this with a spare dash when I fiberglass an extra space for gauges and whatever other nick nacks I want.

what you might want to do Norm is find some light weight material that you could build it back up to stock size with. Then cover it.

Oh and busted getting a Dash at the yard for $20 LOL Fat chance of that these days. Even pick a part it will cost you more than that.

i think they charge $59.99+core 3+ years ago. not sure if prices rose, but even at half off days at $30+core+tax+environmental/recycle fee, it's $40+.

OK, this is EXACTLY what I would like to do with my dash! Any additional info or links to show how it was done?

To the O.P., the only problem I see with removing the vinyl and backing is that the dash vents won't fit flush like they did before. There will be like a 1/8" gap around the vents once you throw everything together. Keep working at it and post more pics!

Not much to it. The second mold is made from the gauge cluster "hump." Placement of it depends solely on you. There is no how-to or guide. Have a few pictures, but too lazy to post them so that's all you get.

If you're not willing to do fiberglass work it's not for you I'll tell you that.

It's just a stock dash with a molded area for gauges and what not. Clean and conventional is all.
