i have been thinking about painting my work cr kai rims, either painting them, or powdercoating them.

i have spray painted a lot of rims before, but never painted some expensive ones

i am thinking about spraying them, because i have heard that powercoating makes them more brittle and can make them weaker, and because i probably plan to drift with them, i dont want to make them weaker at all, and of course it costs a lot more to powdercoat

anybody have any extensive definitive knowledge on powdercoating?

IF they even did make it weaker, which I highly doubt it does. The change would be so significantly low to actually reduce the amount of stress the wheel can take.

Pretty much it would take a hard hit to break them which even if not powder coated would probably destroy your wheels as well.

Just go for it, I wouldn't panick one bit about it.

I have powder coated a few wheels before never had a problem.
BUT the temperature of the oven CAN NOT be higher then 350. thats when people start running into problems when they toss them into a 500 degree oven

Most powdercoating places only go up to 350degrees, atleast the places that know what they are doing anyway. Results will vary depending on your prep of the wheels. Personally, I'd prep with a sandblaster to remove paint/clear and some acetone to remove any grease after blasting.

I started a thread on this just a couple months ago.

I powdercoated my Meisters, and they've been great so far. I prepped them all myself, and them dropped them off. Didn't have any problems reassembling them either. I'd say do it, as opposed to painting them.

There was a guy on supraforums that had a set of Volk Gt-C powder coated. The wheel somehow broke on the way home from the car show and totaled out the car. Not 100% sure if it was the powder coating that caused it though.

Actually 400 is the common degree for powder.

There's other factors that could be the cause of that incident. Highly doubtful that it's the powder coating.

i dont think power coating chips at all it actually embedds itself into the metal. like if u dent the metal the paint will bend with it and not crack off.

A local guy with an RSX broke 2 of his oem wheels after having them powdercoated. I have seen some manufacturers that say not to powdercoat their wheels on their websites as well. That's about as much as I know, but it certainly made me second guess doing it...
