Throw out bearing replacement
never done it before
What should i know. Do i have to drop the tansmission? any Tech articles anywhere on the interwebs to look at? Im doing this tommorow... ---------- Post added at 02:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:35 AM ---------- oh and is it ok to jack up the car on a individual rear suspension by the diff. |

take the tranny out.
pull out thing thats holding "sorry i forgot whats it called. you might as well replace the rear main seal while youre at too so that you dont have to take the tranny out again. and google the factory service manual for your motor.

no its gonna be harder, and just ridiculous, just drop the tranny and while your in there y not change your clutch if you have the $ google 240sx bible and it should tell you ho to change everything in thre. its the ultimate 240 guide

whatever you use it if you want. but if i was rebuilding my motor yes i'll take it out but. my bottome end is done long ago so i dont need to.

its simple just take the tranny off. and loosen the motor mounts so the motor tilt touch the firewall. do that after you for the tranny bolts off then loosen the tranny mounts. have an extra person help with take the tranny off "wiggle out too". and youre go to do whatever you'll have change. there's two or three things you'll have to unplug or take off on the tranny and then you'll be set pull the tranny off

Transmission jobs are the biggest PITA. I just did one on my friends S14, I HIGHLY suggest you get yourself a transmission jack, either buy one or borrow one because it will save you a lot of headaches. Taking that transmission out was not as easy as we figured, more so to put it on.
The throw out bearings a breeze though, just follow the instructions on the FSM. I would suggest taking the entire motor out if you don't have emissions, but even than I would suggest it because it took longer to install the transmission in the car then it would have been to pull the whole thing with the motor out. |

i just did this to my sr .. ( clutch - fly wheel - TOB - rear main seal ) pull the trans out jack the car about 2ft up and put it on some jack stands . its easy job and shouldnt take more then a day.
but like s13silvia123 was saying . do the rear main seal . if you have the money do the clutch. your down there might as well do it .. do not pull the motor way to much time .

I just converted my daily to 5 speed
I hate transmission jobs btw, to OP: do yourself a favor if you're going through the pain to take the tranny out replace clutch resurface flywheel change rear main seal pilot bushing is tricky look up the grease or newspaper method |

Blind hole puller tool.
works fucking magic on the pilot bearing. and ManoNegra it was only hard because you were doing the auto to manual swap... that pilot bushing this is just FUCKED and weird hahah |

take it to a machine shop . got mine done for 15$.
like all the other post's in here . do it all . so its something you dont need to do down the road.

an automotive machine shop will do it for you and won't cost much and, again, do it all at once if you can last thing you want is to have to take the tranny down again because you didn't want to spend ~$15 on a rear main seal |

If you don't want to take it to a shop, just get some 80-grit sandpaper pads at your local auto or hardware store and give it a good sanding for about 5-10 minutes. That's what I did. I know it's not the best option, but I was swapping my transmission for the first time with pretty much the bare necessities so I was tired as F**K after just dropping the original tranny out of there. My flywheel looked pretty clean, so I wasn't too worried about it anyway...especially when I had to look forward to drilling a 1/2" hole in the bellhousing of the new tranny

Holy fuck, sounds like your in way over your head. Find somebody to help you who knows what the hell they're doing before a) you hurt yourself OR b) fuck something up.
Its not hard but if you've never done this before, worst yet, when you ask if you have to take the tranny off to change your TOB, you definitely need more help than somebody can explain to you here. |

i just did this. everything you have to do has been said more or less. just make sure you keep all the bolts for the different parts seperate in bags or cups or something. the cart i had all mine on got moved and it took me forever to get it all back together. its pretty much a breeze to get it out and instal the new parts. its getting the damn thing back in thats a pain in the ass. overall its a relitivly easy job. if your takeing off your clutch make sure you mark it with a paint pen so you put it on the same spot unless your replaceing your clutch. and be carefull when you put your tob in, dont fuck up the bearing itself.

Tips:
1) My friends made fun of me for this, but LABEL THE TRANNY HOUSING BOLTS...........i "drew" on a piece of paper the outline of the housing and where each bolt came from. 2) Loosen motor mounts 3) Yes you can jack from the diff housing, but use as many jackstands as you possibly can as backup, everywhere. 4) Lift all 4 corners, but be careful not to let the car roll off the hydraulic jack or jackstands....not always trivially easy. 5) Make sure you have the right thickness TOB. 6) You really need at least 2 people to help you wiggle it in....one person on the back of the tranny, one near the front. 7) Make sure the pivot fork is properly secured with the pin......I suggest carefully looking at it to see how it's in there before you take it back out. The most annoying thing that can happen is to put it all back together and find that the fork is not properly pushing on the TOB. 8) Of course, test out the clutch and watch the action of the fork before you start the car and lower it again 9) Be careful lowering the car. 10) Don't forget to tighten the motor mounts! 11) Spend the $3 to buy the plastic spline alignment tool, it saves you from a huge headache. 12) Apply grease to the contact surface between the fork and TOB, inside of TOB (which slides along input shaft), and surface of TOB that hits the pressure plate......and also on the splines of the input shaft itself, if it looks dry.

Not to jack your thread but What throw out bearing would i need for a s13 sr20det blacktop? I read that a 93 would work but someone else said a 95 would work also.
