Never trust a physicist to do an engineer's job.

So, the guy that did the welding on my manifold, a certain infamous physics grad student, failed. On the way up to my apt from my parent's house (free groceries and some needed paperwork) my manifold broke into 2 right at the T3 flange. So....

Sucks to be me.... there's also a clicking noise that sounds way too much like valve lash, but that's another story altogether.....

The DIYers take another hit from "home built quality".... but, I'm just hoping to at least have the car ready for the next E-town drift event......

For $1500 I'd sell it. Or trade it with the engine for a (at least mostly) complete SR.

Although... selling the turbo may not be necessary in the near future to start on my next project....

most engineers can't even weld and never have :-) What you really needed was a welder friend, they are hard to find, but very worthwhile. I don't have one, so I end up welding everything myself and hope it's good enough. Did the manifold break at the weld? What material and thickness tubing were you using?

Manifold broke at the weld. The manifold was made out of sched-40 butt welded carbon steel piping.

actually Jeff, Physics Majors are scientists that in these days and age get paid very well and have excellent jobs.
They are reponsible for a majority of the Semiconductor and transitor technology we take for granted.
I should know my father came out of Purdue with a PHD in Physics and went on to design and build the fastest Risc chips in Silicon Valley.

I've never been to E-town before. Kookz told me to go to the next event though, and now that I've got a "less-open" differential, I figure I might as well give it a shot.

Talking I'm my own friend then, heh, heh.

I have only had a years experience, but i'm a natural at it. I can mig and arc weld good, but don't have the funds to buy myself a tig welder. I plan to try my hand at fixing myself a turbo header just to see if I could do it. I don't know if I would do a log type or an actual long curved out header. I like welding, it's pretty simple after awhile. Sad to hear about your cracked header, have any pics of the damage? Is it repairable? Did he arc, tig, or mig that puppy? His welds might have been to light and weak (that's why I want to see some pics). Sometimes that stuff just happens though (not to me, knock on wood).

it's getting rewelded this week.

He mig'ed it. The only weak welds seem to have been on the collector. I've checked all the other welds and they look fine.
