engine cuts off when clutch is in for coasting
when im driving at a decent speed, and push the clutch in the rpms drop, like any cars would, however they drop to 0 and the engine cuts off, i release the clutch and the motor comes back to life... it only does this is at moderately high speeds, not in 1st or 2nd gear really... im thinking it could be because of my cold air intake, maybe its getting more air then it should and it cuts out... any ideas?

That is usually the cause in Z's. I haven't seen it happen to many 240's but its possible. My 91 does this as well, it comes close to dieing. My problem is my MAF adapter is shot so it gets a week signal. You might want to check that, then take a look in the Archive & FAQ section for the AIV valve, your problem could be caused by it being clogged. If those don't work, try to figure out a way to get rid of the turbulence that your intake has to deal with at high speeds.

i had a similar problem because of a broken vaccum line, check all the vaccum hoses. mine was under the throttle body.
does it idle rough and stall when stopped too, or is it just when you are moving? does it do it if you take it out of gear and let the clutch out and coast? |

I've had this damn problem on both my 240's (93 and 92)
But, its getting worse now. The car runs fine.. when you barely gas it the car stutters slightly. and when you drive and come to a light and start slowing down - when you put the clutch in the rev's will drop all the way down causing the car to die/stall. lately.. even at a light, the revs will jump up and down irradically. I did put seafoam in when i first bought the car (earlier this week) and noticed smoke coming from behind the engine block (between the block and firewall) I'm thinking it might be a vacuum line back there?? |

Also a thing to check is were your Air temp sensor is located. I made a custon intake out of pvc and didn't have a place to put the temp sensor so i poked it out the engine bay, were the wheel well is and when i would push the clutch in the revs would drop fast and then stall. I moved the temp sensor into the engine bay and the problem has stopped. I still don't have it installed to anything (just hangin free like being comado)
