q45 brakes
Simple, down to the point. Went to Autozone, priced out two front q45 calipers for $100. They fit on stock lines, perfect. Fit inside the 16" wheels perfect. Need to know, 300zx tt rotors, 300zx na rotors, q45 rotors. And which years of the vehicle? I priced out 97 q45 brakes, wondering if I should get the 90-96 fronts instead? Please dont call me stupid n00b, the website with all the info on the swap is down. Thanks for your time.

I got 95 Q calipers.. they're 2 piston. The rotors are coming from a 95 model from irotors.net for $150 slotted, plated, and re-drilled for 4-lug. The rotor is an 11" rotor

They got slotted rotors on ebay right now for $120 under buy it now. But I'll take the side-by-side with the calipers if anyone wants them, I'll be purchasing them this week hopefully.

I've had the Q calipers on my S14 for over a year. They work very well. I've had no fade during lapping days, which I did with the stock brakes.
I'd recommend changing to braided steel lines at the same time. Really helps the feel. |

Alright, checked out Autozone, got rotors going for $34.99 and calipers going for $50.99 and they're gonna take my s14s in as core, kick ***. Too bad I can't afford the lines, but I am however getting Axxis Metalmasters, gotta splurge somewhere in the process.

I think I will go down to the 'zone and see if they will let me take a rotor out to the car, see if the oem alloys and the rotor will work.
Man...the q45 brake deal seems like the way to go....my factory brakes just don't cut it above 90MPH...and I do the track when I can of course. I go through rotors like two for every 8 tanks of gas..I just burn them up..(on the track, I have been know to go through the complete front brakes in 5 sessions) I saw an 840 BMW and those rotors are to die for...MaSsIvE http://www.performancerotors.com/840.shtml |

As for the brake swap the link posted above would be of greta service in your quest for knowledge. Forum discussion #1 Thread discussion #2 The tt 300zx swap would be better for a little more. Any reason in particular why not? |

I have just completed a 26mm aluminum z-brake swap on my '93 S13. The stock rims cleared by about 1mm to spare with NO spacers. If you are ruling out the z brakes just because of clearance issues, don't. I got 1990 N/A zx aluminum calipers from AutoZone for $150+core for both of them, cross drilled rotors, drilled to 4-lug for $100 each from PDM, and custom steel braded lines for z-brake swap for $100/pair from PDM. Everything bolted up just fine and cleared the stock 7-spoke aluminum wheels without a problem.

yeah so that's ~$350 for 26mm Z brakes vs. ~$200 for Q45 brakes. and i still don't like the idea of just getting bigass front brakes without addressing the rears. Q45 brakes seem like they'd match up with stock S13 rear brakes better...
which brings me to my question: how is the brake balance on Q45 fronts with stock S13 rear? would i still need a MC or a proportioning valve or something?

What about clearance? These rotors are wider than the z32 26mm. Anybody use them with seven spoke alloys?

I remember someone saying you can get blank rotors and have someone drill them, but I forget where, haven't been paying attention to brake threads recently

The rotor width doesn't add anything tot he clearnace issue - It's the caliper design that makes clearnace bad with Z brakes- They have 2 piston on the outside of the rotor, as opposed to only one on the inboard side of the OEM brakes, and 2 on the inboard of the Q45. this means that MUCH less caliper sticks out from the rotor.
And the balance (brake bias) is about the same as the Z brakes - Remember, the Z weighed 3300lbs, and the Q45 weighed 4100 - The Q brakes are in no way weak as compared to the Z brakes. I'd even wager they would not be outperformed given the same pads... FYI - I run Z32 rears with my Q45 fronts (driven by an auto S14 M/C which is 15/16"), and love the feel, although it still locks the fronts WAY before the rears... Later - Brian |

so when buying wheels, what would i need to take into account for the size or the amount of the q45 caliper to clear the wheel. right now i have tein coilovers and my brakes are the stock ones obviously, and it being an 89, they are very tired and rusted so i figured the q45 is a cheaper alternative to the z32. i would just get new rear stcok 240 brakes and calipers along w/ the q45 front. i know that its not the offset, but the wheel design but i cant find any wheels that are w/in my budget and will clear my coilovers and upgraded brakes. i wanted kosei's but they dont make the +27 anymore and i really dont want to have spacers for the wheels. gramlights are looking good but i only like the pro's and those are not w/in my budget. my budget was $1200 w. tires and i want yoko es100's for rubber.maybe it would be easyer not upgrading my brakes and just getting new stock rotors and refurbished calipers. does anyone have opinions to my questions?

Q45 caliper/spoke clearance is the same as stock. They should fit behind any 15" or larger wheel.
As for the need for a brake upgrade, ask yourself why. If you're not stopping fast and short enough, and you're not locking up the tires, then your brake system needs immediate maintenance. Replace the pads, flush the fluid, and replace or resurface the rotors. If you're experiencing fade, try better pads and a high-temperature fluid first. Samn question here too. If they will fit behind S-13 teardrops without a spacer, I am definitly in.
My Stock brakes, almost new, witb SS lines are inadaquate. The MS is also new. Just not enough power when good and hot. After the 5th or 6th full brake down on the track from the century mark and going into turns...they are ineffective. Rotors too small, not enough clamping power and too much heat. At night they are red hot during a session. Stock rears are more than good enough for my style of flogging. Even with some rear wheel lockups, no fade and no excessive temperature. I am considering 840i BMW brakes if the Q's will not fit behind the rim...and a lot of modification to the mounts. |

Yes!
Then I finally know what my next upgrade shall be. ...Been looking around for something meaningful to do. My Brakes suck above 100MPH on a large rally track. Now I am excited. 2 weeks out and a full report and pictures Yee haw!! |
