coil pack check

my car has a rough idle and I changed my plugs and now when I start the car it go to 900 rpm and cuts off.. then I put the old plugs and the same thing happened.. I want too kno if im getting spark.. how do I do this with coil packs... do I just lif up the coil when the car is on?

Lift the coil out and take a spark plug wire, attach it inside the coil, then to a plug and ground it out on something metal.

When i was checking for spark i just pulled a coil out with the plug still connected to it. I then just had someone attempt to start the car while i held the plug to the valve cover.
