When ever I am driving up a hill and go to shift in to 4th (either upshifting or down shifting) it tries to grind on me. It has started to do it more often and has even done it once in to 5th. If I double clutch it doesn't do it, but it still grinds if I rev match. Any Idea what it could be( bad tranny, slave cylinder, ect.). My car is an '89 coupe with an sr and ACT street and strip clutch. thanks in advance for the help.

Sounds like your snycros are going bad. The only way to replace them is a rebuild. I'd change your tranny oil, as that MAY appease some of the grinding.

thats what I was afraid of. I already changed the tranny oil a few days ago(mobil 1).

before you go freaking out and put a new tranny in...check your clutch freeplay and make sure it's adjusted to factory specs. there is a page in the FSM specifically devoted to getting it setup right.

try using gm synchromesh fluid (only available at GM dealers) it is the best i have found for making aged parts quiet down

yeah i gotta agree with linja sounds like your synchros are going bad... people usually double clutch on cars with old tranny's like the ones without synchros to eliminate grinding.. anyhow check your synchros.

Double clutching or not, I can easily get a grind downshifting into 3rd from 4th. And my tranny is like brand freaking new. I think its literally an issue with the KA transmission. I know that my shifting is fine.

I have the same problem too and my motor has only 37000 miles on it but it doesnt grind instead it feels kinda rough going into gears. I grind occasionally going into reverse from a stop sometimes and i dont know why. Maybe its my old tranny fluid that needs to be replaced. But any how try getting the B&M short shifter to shorten up the throws and probably eliminate the chances of grinding. Thats what im thinking about getting since the throws are so long and rough.

Let me say it again:

If your clutch is not adjusted properly, it will not disengage enough, which causes grinding. Check that first before you spend more money on fluids/synchros/shifters/etc. Oh, and a short shifter will not make grinding go away...in fact, it'll make it worse. By installing a short shifter, and shifting faster, you are asking your synchros to work FASTER. If they are sorta crappy to begin with, this will only exacerbate the problem.

Well I had the clutch installed at the shop that did my swap. I am assuming the clutch was adjusted properly( but you know what happens when you assume). I am going to see Wayne at Phase2 tomorrow maybe he will take a look for me. Thanks again for the help guys.

Here's the thing:

putting an engine and tranny does not require adjustment of the clutch pedal...so most shops don't bother. if it drives, they just leave it. the pedal SHOULD be adjusted whenever work is done to the clutch system, however. it takes about 30 mins (your first time) to get it right and about 4 tools.
