got a parking ticket i have a question

I got a parking ticket for parking after 10pm at La Jolla shores (beach parking lot). It was so dark I couldnt see any signs. There are absolutely no lights in the parking lot, it is impossible to see color. The roads there are pretty narrow. There are lots of cars parked along the sidewalk, so I was trying my hardest not to hit anything, so I must have missed the sign that said no parking after 10pm. I never actually saw a sign that said no parking after 10pm, I assumed there was a sign AFTER I got the ticket and after I left.

My question is should I just pay the $40 dollar ticket or can I appeal or reduce the fine? I seriously think this is bull****. I can pay the ticket, but I don't have much money to fall back on right now. Thanks for any advice. I don't want any "you're a moron for blah blah blah". What would you do in my position?

it makes me wonder, if it is so dark how are tehy be able to write you up ? and also what about the cars next to you ? i'm not too sure about your area but in nyc, we don't have to pay after 10pm so you might check on to that. 1 more thing what does the tickets for? is it sanitation or something eles ?

240Degrees: its a legit ticket there are several signs there you just had the misfortune of missing them. You could consider yourself lucky as the police have been known to start the night off by bringing in a tow truck and carting cars off then and there.

s13driver: It's free parking there 24-7 you just cant stay past 10pm or get there earlier then 530am (I think). It's a small parking lot as it is and being a popular beach the parking lot gets filled up with vultures patrolling for spots. I think the reasoning behind closing the lot is to reduce crime and prevent folks from camping out overnight to get spots. I know when I go diving at the shores that the parking lot can be filled up by 8am.

I think I'll just pay it. A couple friends are chipping in to pay for it, so hopefully I'm out only 20 bucks.. I guess it could be worse like having my car towed. There were no other cars in the parking lot when i got back to my car oh well thanks for feedback guys. I was guessing the reason for this law is to prevent crime because it's so dark.
