Clunks in the rear everytime I shift.. help?
I just bought a stock 96" 240sx and every time I shift (except if I rev it out real high, or if I'm off the gas for a couple seconds before i push the clutch to shift) in clunks in the rear. The girl I bought it from said it has been doing it for a couple years.
Any ideas what it could be? The car is 100% stock besides a muffler. Also, the knock sensor needs to be replaced, anyone know how hard it is to do that, or around how much it would cost to do it? |

had the same prob ended up getting a energy suspension diff bushing kit for like 30 bux from frsport, havent had the prob since, rear end feels alot more solid now. you cant get just a stock replacement from the dealership, you have to get the nismo diff set which is like 150 bux lol

As for replacing the knock sensor. It's easy if you have skinny hands/forearms. Just stick your hand/arm in between the upper/lower intake and it's right there.
Use a ratchet with long extensions and a wobble going from the top near the fuel hoses.

Awesome, I don't have small hands, but that means it should be a cheap fix! Thanks! |

9 times out of 10 it's your subframe bushings. The rubber becomes brittle and rips/tears from the center support. I suggest pulling the rear subframe out and replacing them with the Nismo pieces, unless you want no flex at all, then use aluminum bushings. The Nismo pieces can be found at rhdjapan.com. Other places like thenismoshop, splparts, 240sxmotoring, etc. will carry the aluminum parts. There are guides on how to do the removal and replacement of the bushings yourself. Or you can pull the subframe out and take it to a mechanic to have them replaced. I suggest that you don't take the whole car there to do the bushings as it'll cost and arm and a leg.

I'm trying to figure out if its my diff bushings or my subframe bushings, I would like to know before I take things apart for the first time. Anyone know how to tell the difference? |

If you go out and do a clutch dump, do you get alot of wheel hop? If so, it's your subframe bushings... Even if you don't, it's still your subframe bushings. Trust the guys that have been on the forum for multiple years and have upwards of 1k posts or more... I've replaced mine and it was my subframe bushings.

Go manhandle the sub and diff with a pry bar. Its obvious when you feel a bad bushing or see too much movement. Also look for weather wear/cracking. Just did 3 S14's last week same shit. Not to repeat 300 times but check sub first.

I don't see how people say they are expensive to replace. I just got quoted $220 from Drift Office (a local reputable shop) to change my subframe bushings, diff bushings, and my knock sensor.
I would take a shot at it myself, but I'm off at college with no garage and very limited amount of tools. |

Get the Nismo bushings, not the energy suspension crap. It looks like they dont have the subframe bushings. Try rhdjapan.com, they should have both sets of bushings youre looking for. When you have them installed make sure the correct bushings are installed in the right spot. The front two are different from the back two.

Generally speaking, the people that have been around awhile, know more than those that havent, be it post count or join date. So dont get all butt hurt when i call you an idiot.
