s13/s14 coupe's with sub's help
hello i have a 1990 s13 coupe and im putting 2 12" subs in the trunk and was wondering if any one has any suggestions on box design because im having a really hard time trying to figure it out
pictures would help measurements would be even better i dont really care if its a sealed box or ported maybe even 2 sepreat boxes so far this is all ive came up with a sealed box 12 3/4" high not much height in the trunk 12" deep and 33"wide and also do i need those two bars that run from trunk lid support arm things they run across the top of the trunk ? thankyou |

I'm not 100% but I think those bars are what keeps the trunk lid up when you open it (some sort of spring tension when they twist). That's all you need them for... if you wanna be really clever you could custom-fit a gas prop on each side, like BMW trunks and others use, that would get the bars out of the way.
Not something I would do (I wouldn't want that much bass anyway heh) but good luck with the fit.

Hahaha, I have all your answers. I have 2 12"s in a bandpass, the ONLY place they fit, is your backseat.
Only way you can do 2 12"s, is to make a long flat box that will cover your sparetire, and you can completely forget about trunk space (what little there is to begin with). To get it to fit under the back deck (with spare tire in), you only have 9" of clearance. You could do a single 10" firing upwards, or 2 8"s firing upwards. If you don't want the spare, build a fibreglass box in the wheel well, that could easily house one 10. Keep in mind, these are ALL sealed boxes. To get ported or bandpass, you're looking backseat. I must admit, the bass is pumping and its quiet outside the car (since you're so close to the bass). You don't get that nasty ass trunk rattle, and you don't get the attention of the police. I just covered the subs in this very pimp blanket, and I get positive comments on it all the time. Basically, the s13 coupe is crap for building some massive booming system. The hatchback has way more room and a lot more options. Hope that helps ya.

its really hard to fit 12's in a s13 trunk, unless you use a truck box or some kind of over thin box and lay it so the subs are facing up towards the trunk lid, i couldnt fit 12's in mine, so i just got 1 10" JL, and it still bumps kinda.

you can put a ten on each side of the back seat behind the plastic panels next to where the passengers sit and when they can rest their arms. you just make a plate to bolt in there behind it and mount your sub in that plate, I hear you just use dyna mat and polyfill and it sounds great. If you had 2 jl audio 10w3's or 10w6's with a good amp im sure thats all the bass you could want, plus you would loose no space at all and it would be lighter than a big box. I am planing on doing this on one side because I dont need too much bass

You'd have to be cutting away all that plastic, but thats a pretty damn good idea. No problems with the seatbelts for the passenger/driver though?

I'll go measure my box, it fits 2 12s w/ ~ 1ft^3 each.
The box fits right in the back of the hatch and fire on a 60 deg angle to the ground. You do lose a lot of trunk space but it'll fit right in w/out cutting or dis-assembling... Do u have AutoCAD? If u do I'll try to find the 3-d file... Last edited by mrdirty; 02-23-2003 at 12:40 PM.. |
