This is just kinda a general statement applying to all car owners, just thought i'd share. When i did my exhaust, it became rather loud inside the car...not much insulation and a lot of resonance. Long story short, i decided i'd dynamat the trunk to quiet her down a bit. After looking at prices for dynamat ( 5- 1 sq. foot pieces w/foil backing and self-adhering for $25), i knew there was a better deal. so i was at work (Lowe's) today looking around and found this stuff thats meant to insulate central air ducts. It's exactly the same as dynamat only a bit thinner(a little over 1/8" as opposed to 1/4") and doesn't have a cool name brand on the back. Best part? it comes in a 1' X 15' roll for $16. Do the math: 5 sq. ft./$25 or 15 sq. ft./$16. Even double layered its cheaper, and then thicker. This stuff does the trick, just letting everyone know so they can save some cash...a lot of cash if you dynamat most of your car like i plan to eventually do for whatever reason, road noise, car stereo, wahtever. Just a suggestion for those who like to save a buck on that stuff and put it under the hood....

Yeah, I bought a roll of this stuff before. Haven't had a chance to try it outyet, but its definately a lot cheaper than dynamat and looks like it should do the trick. I think I got it even cheaper than that at Home Depot.

GOD even when i'm not at work i hear people saying Home Depot is better/cheaper/etc. AGHH!

Yeah its called "peel and seal" and its been around for years in the car stereo market. I have a couple rolls left over in the basement from a car I used to compete in IASCA with.
It doesn't work quite as well as dynomat or another brand name for actual sound deadening, and it stinks quite a bit more. In addition it requires more extensive surface prepation (alcohol, etc) or it won't stay stuck on vertical/upside down surfaces, especially in hot weather. And on really hot days it can make your car stink like tar, and the tar can run out.
But for the price it works great, especially for floors where its under the carpet anyway. A tip to get it to stick is to clean carefully first, and then use a heatgun or a hair drier and use a big roller to press it on.

it's really light, I'd say the whole roll was less than 2 pounds easily.In any case, its not enough weight to worry about.

What is the stuff called and who makes it?

I looked today at Home Depot for the same stuff, but they didn't have anything self adhearing.

I'm guessing you found the stuff in the pluming/heating section?

mine is "Frost King" brand, it's in plumbing/HVAC at Lowe's so it ought to be the same at Home Depot...Except of course Home Depot sucks...

peel and seal is the shizzle it is actually ment as a moisture barrier for tin roofing but i honestly think it works even better than dynamat

Well, I've met one sales guy at home depot in the last 5 years who knew his shiet. Ever try to buy metric hardware. I dare you to find a metric stud or threaded rod. Home depot used to be good before they put all the small building supply places out of business. I worked for a small hardware store when I was in high school, and I will still give small hardware stores my business over a megaconglamacorp any day of the week.

As it stands the sales guys looked at me like I had two heads when I said I wanted a self adhearing insulation material... F home depot.

sorry about the slam, but every person that b|tches at me about lowes says "as soon as they build a home depot here (which will be never) i'm never coming to lowes again", then they're back the next day....plus whenever i go to Home Depot in harrisburg they're dicks...anyways, at lowes i do whatever they want me to. Push carts, work on the register, stock shelves, go on delivery, sometimes i work departments (electrical, lumber, whatever)...it pays decent for being part time.

docrice it sounds like you now your stuff if they have you in all those areas. Would love to have a guy like you working under me. As far as the people at home depot being jerks ( i know you said something other than that) we hear the same thing that docrice does. I hate home depot and as soon as there is a lowes closer I will be going to that store. And like he said they are back the next day spending a chunk of money. One thing to always remember guys is not everyone that works for these two companies always knows what they are talking about. As you can probably tell me and docrice are one of the few teens or younger adults that can pretty much tell you what you need to know. I have grown up around the contruction area so this is all second nature to me. Just remember patience most of the time at either store someone will be able to help you and if they can't they will find someone that can. The people that work under me know that if they don't there is hell to pay.

Same here. I worked at Hugh M. Woods (Payless Cashways) for 3 years. Awesome store. I sold tools, electrical, lighting and paint. Home Despot sucks.

Oh, and so does WalMart. I don't shop at Sprawl Mart.

hey how bad can this stuff smell? and under wat temp? cuz it gets up to high 90's here during the summer, and even though its a great deal, i dont want my car stinkin up during an auto x event or even worse, when im makin deliveries all day long.

since i put it in i have noticed only a faint smell when i open the trunk up, its not too noticeable, and i think what andrave was talking about is a different item. I don't think that there's tar in this, and as of yet i can't vouch for how good the adhesive is but bear in mind, usually its under/behind a carpet/seat/spare tire/etc. that holds it in place fairly well.
