california people

Just a few things im moving back to oceanside june 1st, here in ohio we do no thave to deal with anything emissions related, what all happens during a smog? are swapped motors illegal? Can you even take a car to smog that is modded? I talked to a few people and get all types of mixed answers. Any help would be great!

Don't register the car in Cali. Once you move, just drive the car with your Ohio plates and tabs. Use your current residential address for the car.If you have any other cars, register them in Cali. Not sure if this would work, just a suggestion. Also, don't do anything stupid that would attract the police, like drift or speed on the streets. Have fun in Commyland.

Hmmm that would prolly be a lot of work? You would have to reg the car in a different state with a different name.

I'm a smog tech in Cali, anything that didn't come on the car when it was produced is considered modified and is will fail smog unless you have EO numbers for every part. You can go to a referee station to see if he will pass it, if he does he will give your car a certificate and enter it into the DMV's database and it will be legal.

ya state ref is your best bet. One of my friends swapped a Euro. R h22 from an accord into a 93 prelude and when he took it to the state ref. he just said a check on this vehicle and motor is not required, just go to a regular smog check and get it done. He drives completely legal everyday. That was a honda idk what the deal is with a nissan.

Keep your car reg'd in Ohio or wherever, that way cops won't pop your hood. Legal because you're active duty stationed here.

When it comes time to renew your Ohio tags, do whatever you need to do in order to do that.

What's funny is I used to be stationed in VA and IL, and had vehicles reg'd there, and when I came home I kept them reg'd out of state even though I was back home. Anything other than a CA plate and the cops won't bother harassing you for illegal mods.

You have to change you license sooner or latter and once that happens you can't keep an out of state Reg in your name.

You have 3 options -

Don't live in Kali

Buy a Pre-72 classic. Mod away and even get thumbs up from cops while doing burn outs in middle an intersection with school children.

Vote Republican, get those nuts out of your state senate already. 90% of California's air pollution cones from China and the shipping industry these days. Look it up, the worlds 10 largest ships in one year pollute more then all the cars in the world combined.

Welp im prolly better off keeping the car in ohio and selling it. Its an evo thats 100% street legal but was built as an all purpose street /drag car , I just have no idea about the smog. the only thing stock in my engine is the block and crank.

What about just using the car as non op and using it as a track car? This would be my only other option. I wish car modding is as easy as ohio, shit I drive to and from the track, click off a 9 second run without a cage and drive home. Ohio does not give 2 shits.

You could drive it with the Ohio tags for as long as possible but eventually you'll need to get Cali plates, unless your active duty military then you can keep Ohio tags. Non op is a good idea if the car already has Cali plates and you're not gonna drive it on the streets for a few years so you don't get hit with having huge registration fees for the past years you didn't register it, their are places that do "hot" smogs but I don't recommend it, if you get pulled over and they pop your hood and see illegal parts you might as well say good bye to your car for at least 30 days, plus all the fees your going to pay. It sucks I'm a smog tech and I can't even drive my 240 On the road without having a stock motor to swap in every two years to pass.

yeah i'd proabably sell it before you come if its that modified, its going to be a bitch to smog, and if you have changed the compression and shit it most def wont smog in cali, plus a stock motor for an evo isnt as easy or cheap to find and buy as something like a 240sx engine
