Speedo question
OK guys, I've got a problem. 1990 Ka24E.
I have the infamous non-functioning HUD problem, HOWEVER I also had NO lights in the dash cluster. The lights in the radio/HVAC controls worked, but the only thing working in the gauge cluster was the tach. The odometer didn't work either. Fast forward to today. I got a spare cluster and HUD from another S13. I put it in before realizing that it was from a DOHC car, so the tach doesn't work. My own fault, however the HUD and speedo on the new cluster also aren't working. My question is this: are the speedometers also different between SOHC and DOHC cars? Or is there a speed sensor or something that is either bad or is different between the engines? The backlighting is working now, so that's OK. Don't know if the new odo works, I don't want to drive it until it's put back together. To sum up: neither HUD nor speedo are working. Everything else is, except for the tach, which I know how to deal with. I really need help. My dash is all over the passenger floor right now until I get this resolved.

OK seriously, what do I have to do to get someone to look at this post? My car is in pieces, I have a simple question that searching has not answered, and I need help. Basic question: is there a difference between SOHC and DOHC speedometers, OR will the speedometer simply not light up if the speed sensor is bad?

You need the speed sensor for the DOHC.

So you're telling me the speed sensors are different? If the sensor was bad, would the speedo just read zero, and since it's the wrong sensor it's blank?

Do you have any friends with 240s. Grab a DOHC speed sensor and do a swap to see if it works.
I understand your position considering that electrical items can't be returned but I am almost positive that the SOHC speed sensor will not work with a DOHC cluster. Edit: After reading your post again what about the HUD wasn't working? Just the HUD or the speedo on the cluster also? The tach on the DOHC cluster won't read a SOHC signal and the speed sensor won't show without the DOHC speed sensor. My suggestion: Get a FSM and a voltometer and get to work! sorry I can't be more help but that is exactly what I would do in your positon
